How is advocating for a new set of best practices any more "demanding" or wishful than a regime of obligatory replication? And how is this categorically different from current practices such as peer review, disclosing conflicts of

It seems like the most consistent quality of Linux detractors is that they hold Linux to a much higher standard than a proprietary OS. When an application doesn't work, install, or even exist on Windows or OS X it's the applicatio

This ^ I have never thought much about the design of the site and that's a good thing. It succeeds in delivering information quickly and efficiently, which I imagine is the most important thing for LVN's readers. I would conside

I have an alternative proposal: do a study right the first time. That means: A) Pre-registering the study design, including the statistical analysis. Otherwise, attaching a big label "Exploratory! Additional confirmation needed!"

This opinion is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of how the internet works. A client which is on the same network as a server can request data from the server, and the server chooses how to reply. The internet is just a really big

I would argue a strong "no". 1. Usage: R has seen continual growth whereas SAS's market share has been on the decline for years. This is based on number of scholarly citations, Google Trends, number of books and blog posts wi

Agreed. I see it as both a cultural thing as well as practical thing (perhaps what initially lead to it becoming cultural). The reason for the second part is because most analyses are not easily reproducible--they exist as a smattering of d

Physics PhDs will have taken more math courses than Psychology PhDs on average, but I am pretty skeptical that they have taken more statistics courses. I would like to see the evidence for that if you have it.

I don't see the need for publishing the constituent studies before publishing the "meta-analysis". The individual studies aren't contributing unique theoretical arguments; they are additive toward a single argument that

Probably the definitive document making the case for Nix (and Guix by extension) is Eelco Dolstra's PhD thesis [0] . The introduction is a good read by itself. I have never used Guix/GuixSD but have heard good things about it. Beh

Setting up a new system is where NixOS really shines. Once you have one system working it is trivial to duplicate it on new metal. 1. Install NixOS 2. Copy configuration.nix* 3. Copy dotfiles 4. # nixos-rebuild switch 5. Enjoy your old setu

Snappy, Docker et al. are the newest beasts in the evolution of packaging solutions. Nix and Guix decided evolution was too slow and to skip ahead an epoch or two.

I have been wondering the same thing. If not outright disabling the service, would it be sufficient to license one's software in a way that prohibits it being used in East Texas? Would that remove standing to sue in the district?

It's hard to say what caused this without more information, but the flip side is that it demonstrates the power of Nix. Everything required to get Atom working--all the way down to something as basic as the display server--is explicitl

What "traditional" methods are you referring to? Hubel and Wiesel mapped the functional anatomy of the visual cortex in the 1950s by poking at cat brains. We've learned more since but their original model is still largely cor

Yes, you can do this. There is a utility "nix-docker" that will convert a Nix configuration file into a BusyBox Docker image (see e.g. http://zef.me/blog/6049/nix-docker )

I am a happy NixOS user but am glad to see this project progressing and gaining a wider audience. It shows that the ideas behind Nix are solid and offer more than just theoretical advantages over a traditional OS (and its package manager).
