If you play around 1) older machines, or 2) desktops in VMs, it's handy to know what uses less memory. I used to use XFCE in these circumstances but have switched to LXDE based on comparisons like these. Good balance between memory usa

Walter Jon Williams' "Hardwired", 1986. Protagonist had billions of dollars on a chip that he had implanted in his body for safekeeping. I thought "that will never work." He also had people jacked in to the stock market, getting 10-second l

Anyone know a quick way to add who someone is following to a twitter account? I'd love to set one up and follow who he's following.

I had eight years of (hobbyist) Lisp experience when I was laid off in May; by then I was using Clojure in my home projects. Two of my interviews mentioned Scala, one place used it as their main language. I decided that, even if the languag

Having lived through it, the problem that Java uniquely solved in the '90s was that software companiesn had fallen in love with OO but C++ was too complicated for developers to use safely, with pointers vs. references problems, operator ove

Am I the only Ubuntu user that likes Unity? Then again it could just be because it reminds me of Macs and a Mac is my main machine.

Look into the Mate desktop - it's a rebuild of Gnome 2 with maintainable code. Best way for a test spin now is get the Linux Mint Debian Mate iso and try it in a VM. I actually like Unity, but in Mint the Mate desktop is my favorite, lookin

I upgraded three things at once - OSX Lion, VMWare Fusion 4, and Ubuntu 12.04 - and one or more of those things enabled the fancy graphics, windows fade in and out, the nicer task switcher, all that when you enable 3d graphics in the VM.

I'd use a VM if you're running things like mysql, nosql stuff, etc. OSX it seems like everyone has a different way of installing things, on a Linux it's just "sudo apt-get", plus if you have issues there's more documentation and forums for
