From the outside, developing, it can be. But running and configuring the platform from the inside pays well and has several "low-code" way of doing reasonably scoped tasks.

Look into Salesforce. You might do well as a Salesforce administrator. You can set up your own small "org" and do their training, Trailhead, try some administrative training and see if it's up your alley.

Every time one of these articles comes along we hear about fast I/O and how other hardware can't handle the volume. Why not? What makes mainframe hardware so special that it can't be duplicated in other architectures?

I guess we'll see how much of that was what you said and how much is "I need to be in the same room as these people to do my work", which won't, or soon won't be true like it was for the past 100+ years.

Just wait until it's decades. I look at some of the Windows C++ code I wrote in the 90's and it's unrecognizable. Until I look at the sarcastic comments and think "yep, that's me".

You kids with your fancy websites. Our 36th anniversary is this week. My first "love" program was a Windows 3.1 application based on the cute banter we had. Hand-drawn icon! Writing text to the Windows Device Context! In the 90&#x

I like multiple monitors when you have two of the same size and vertical resolution next to each other at the same height. Having the mouse cursor jump I find to be distracting. On a laptop I usually stick to the one "monitor".

Like others here, I have 10,000+ bookmarks on pinboard and add several daily. I can be on any number of computers, iPad, phone at any given time so an online, centralized database of sites, personally tagged, is extremely useful.

18,000+ bookmarks for me, although I started with del.icio.us back in 2006 and imported them when it went away. So yeah, I'm a fan.

I'm a patient at a (physical) rehab place, and my case manager is expecting. With COVID-19, any gifts like baby clothes seem too germy, and the best I can think of is a gift card that she can sanitize. Better than paper cash, and we do

Related to the future time travel. You somehow get thrown into the past, say 100-150 years. How do you put out a message proving you're from the future and requesting time travelers to come back and rescue you? My proposal is to take o

Here's the problem I see with unplugging to work; maybe it's an actual problem, maybe I'm just fooling myself. I work on software. I want the finished product, to build something useful for myself or others. I don't nece

I loved the switch to Intel, it made virtualization on par with Windows and Linux, and lately it's easy, for example, to load games from Steam. I'm glad I got a 2019 MacBook Pro, I hope to use it for many years, then I'll hav

OMG yes. So many times all you needed was what Tomcat delivered, but had to go through the convoluted and slow config of WebSphere. WebLogic was better but that's damning with faint praise.

Some of the book recommendations seem outdated, such as Effective JavaScript, which was published in 2015, no use of any of ES6+ features. They help a lot. For modern JavaScript I'm really liking Manning Book's The Joy of JavaScri

One of the selling points of tensorflow.js is that you do your processing on the client, for privacy reasons. This is heavy, heavy processing, and you're doing it right.

Will it still be that way though? B.C. (Before Covid) the thinking was you took online courses because you "couldn't get into a real college", but for a few years at least _everyone_ will be having online classes.

Ever hear of the urban legends of knocking people out and stealing one of their kidneys? This would make it real. There's a whole bunch of science fiction based on this, Larry Niven coined the term organlegger: https://blog.
