I'm not making excuses, but comparing a custom solution like Bloomberg terminals to a versatile platform like the Web is not a fair comparison. Despite the inherent performance disadvantages, people are stepping up and working on pushi

Do Bloomberg terminals use an off-the-shelf framework (vs. custom, proprietary code) and run on the open Web (vs. a private network)? What is easier for someone with no degree and little experience, programming a Bloomberg terminal or build

I read that discussion. The patent grant is very asymmetrical. Why should an entity using React be vulnerable to being sued by Facebook for unrelated patents and be unable to challenge those patents?

And a good reason for someone to claim a patent is invalid is being sued for violating that patent.

It's unfair and one-sided because you cannot sue Facebook for infringing an unrelated patent, but if Facebook sues you for an unrelated patent, you will lose your rights if you try to assert (defensively) that their patent is invalid.

Performance matters, but if Ember can have 50-60% of the speed of a performance-optimized React app without the associated cognitive overhead, I suspect many will see the trade-off as worth it.

React's unfair and one-sided patent grant aside (personally, I will never build a real app with React unless that situation changes), it is not a complete MVC framework, and to my knowledge there is nothing that fills in the gaps to ma

Does the new relationship between Io.js and ARM mean we'll finally have GNU+Linux packages for recent releases? I was unable to build node from source on Ubuntu, and the best I can do is a PPA update which gives me v0.10.36 instead of

I really want to support Firefox OS and abandon Android. But Mozilla keeps missing the mark as far as I'm concerned. I don't want a flip phone, or a low-spec phone, or one that's only available in Japan. I just want something

I will never use React for anything but (possibly) toy projects. You don't need a lawyer to tell you being unable to sue Facebook for patent infringement even if unrelated to the licensed software, while Facebook is free to sue you for

An easy solution to the tab problem is to use spaces instead. A good text editor will even let you use the tab key to insert a set number of spaces.

Why is it "not very nice" to GPL a fork of a BSD-licensed project? If an author believes in their permissive license, they shouldn't complain about how their code is used. Edit: fixed a typo.

I have my own odd way of rewarding CC-licensed content: If it has no DRM but is 'all rights reserved', and I really want a copy, I wait for a chance to buy it at a deep discount. If it is released under a CC 'non-commercial&#

Aesthetically, I see intermingling whitespace-significant with non-whitespace-significant syntax as problematic. I personally like whitespace-significant languages like Python, Haml, indented SASS, and CoffeeScript. Others don't. It&#

The absurdity of betting your livelihood on a Microsoft 'promise' aside, to me this reads as a green light to use, but not extend, the .NET runtime. MS still doesn't get free software, and probably never will. Edit: My bad. &

I've tried Chrubuntu and it doesn't work as well as Crouton. The wifi, specifically, is flaky. Have you had better luck with the Chromebook 2 specifically?

I currently use the Samsung Chromebook 2 with Ubuntu via Crouton, and it runs nicely. But it's not the same as running a full GNU+Linux system with free software and hardware, and the on-board 16 gigs of storage is rather limiting. I w

If it's a coordinated effort it will resonate. It's risky, but the best way to bring attention to the issue. In the long-run, it would cost less than allowing Comcast and others to practice legal extortion.

Here's an idea: Google, Twitter, FaceBook, Amazon, etc. all slow traffic to their sites, along with a clickable notice at the top suggesting they take action to prevent future slowdowns.
