Nope – in the US at least, you don't even need to scratch the cards. Some stores have scanners that can tell whether the card is a winner or not and pay out if it is.

I was excited to see Adobe using jQuery, but then was brought down thinking about how they got here. Adobe was so stuck on making the swf a de facto standard that they completely missed the boat defining the direction of the web. While Ap

I think the debate is this: The CS people see the biologists as overcomplicating the problem while the biologists see the CS people as oversimplifying. I do understand that eventually we will be able to simulate the brain of an adult withou

It's true that we do that, but we at least understand the framework. Simulated models are the basis of a lot of neuro research, but we need to do so much more biology before we can begin to even try to simulate the brain in any useful way

I agree — we can't simulate something we don't understand, and it's nearly impossible to estimate how long it will take to understand anything. We don't even know what consciousness is , so how can we even begin to simulate it?

I thought that comment was still a little inaccurate — "the environment" in biology is not only what the brain actually processes and learns, it includes the chemical environment as well. The genome does not explicitly describe how the cel

After getting called out for having an issue every cell phone has, Apple did a photo shoot of a testing facility that every other cell phone manufacturer also has and used it as marketing.

I have trouble believing this story is true since it seems like an incongruous thing for Jobs to say and there's not even an attempt at showing evidence that the email is legit. Blogs get lots of views if they have a story about Steve Jobs

One of our clients on Bluehost was hacked in the last few days too, but not with this. We noticed today, but I'm not sure when it happened. Here's the script. http://rayschamp.com/misc/spammer.html

The reason is, that because every pixel is half the visual size, you may have to double the values of many CSS properties. For example text-shadow: 0 1px 0 #fff; which is like a half visual pixel on the iPhone 4. If this is true, I'll be

The reason I finally decided to buy an iPad was that Apple products hold their value pretty well. When the next gen comes out, I think I'll be able to sell this one for a reasonable amount. I'll take the few hundred dollar "loss" as the p

Poi is similar. I think there's a continuum that connects several circus arts — as you go from juggling to poi/flag swinging to meteors to short staff to long staff, you lose freedom of motion in exchange for more regular patterns. It's h

That reminds me of Richard Feynman, who tried to keep a list of everything he didn't understand. Smart people pay more attention to what they don't know than what they do.

Right — it's impossible to perfectly simulate something we don't even understand in physical terms (we can only simulate what we think it's doing). Though it's debatable whether artificial consciousness is needed for human-level artificial

The other reason not to use margin and padding together is that you'll have less inconsistencies between browsers (i.e., IE6 vs every other browser — these properties are a source of a lot of annoying IE6 bugs).

That works for me, nice job. You could improve it by faking a light source and having them cast shadows. Shooting 3D photos, I've found that shadows really enhance the feeling of depth. Edit, kind of related, here's a "virtual" stereo wher

That's true, but this is a way to perceive depth for people who can't view stereoimages (e.g., people blind in one eye). You do experience some amount of depth even though each eye is receiving the same information. From http://en.wikiped
