Maybe buttonless for the iPad, but I doubt it for the iPhone as you would lose the ability to use it one-handed.

I'm not at my computer so can't find the reference but there has been an ongoing experiment in Russia where they selectively bred Siberian foxes and after about 20 generations had a female that responded to her name and craved human attenti

I don't think Gruber is framing it as "good vs evil". More - "why are you dropping support for H264 on grounds of openness but not dropping support for Flash (and MP3 and AAC) on those same grounds?"

It's not Apple that wants you to use SMS - it's EVERYONE. I bought my first mobile over twelve years ago because of SMS, not voice, as it replaced the pagers that me and my friends had.

For work I have weekly text files, where I write down what I'm doing. Originally this was to help me compile the weekly timesheets that my (then) employer required. But the notes saved me from a lawsuit and I know find it useful for keeping

So if the original authors of VLC (not the authors of the iOS app) granted that permission to Apple then this wouldn't be an issue?

Two of my favourite points about the iPad are the battery life and the instant-on (including connecting to Wifi - OSX on my MBA is crap by comparison). Arguably hardware features, but ones that won't work without deep software support. Wind

Don't forget to set your headers - Heroku uses Varnish on the front end so you your app may not even be touched (and hence no extra dynos needed) in a lot of cases.

A big problem Microsoft has is their pre-announcements. They will announce stuff before it's ready so when it does arrive there's no buzz about it. BUT it's a necessary culture for them because of the way their business interdepends upon t

I consider Test::Unit a testing tool while Rspec is a documentation tool that happens to do testing - hence the verbose matchers. (thinking about it that's also a good description of TDD vs BDD - TDD is meant to be run, BDD is meant to be

There appears to be an ongoing low-level diplomatic conflict between the UK and Russia since the FSB guy who was killed on British soil - I'm sure that plays a part in his comment.

Cheers (that's why I love this place). At the moment I use Authlogic in Rails, which uses SHA512 by default (SHA512 is built into the Ruby core libs). But I also notice that it's quite easy to switch to bcrypt (using the bcrypt gem). Is it

It's worse than that - I admit I know very little about crypto. So when it comes to implementing a password storage system I read up a bit, get confused, ask a couple of people and get different answers back. It's the "get confused" bit tha

The real issue is when you have feature branches and merge them in to master/trunk - so it's not a single file conflicting, but maybe a week or more's worth of work from both developers. As you say, it would rely on notifications that there
