So if I see you walking down a PUBLIC street and you are talking loudly, it's acceptable for me to smack you round the head with a baseball bat for being too loud? Or do we expect people in a civilised society to have some higher standards

Or even better "I'm not sure about your idea because..." as that leaves the door open to it being a misunderstanding on my part, which is always a possibility.

Depends upon your definition of democracy. Even in our "western" democracy, the right to vote is limited (whether age, residency, prisoner-status etc). In the USSR, only members of the Soviets (worker's councils) could vote, as the Soviets

37Signals also sprinkle their stuff with "this works for us, we're not saying it's for everyone". They are outliers, and much as I love and am inspired by them, if what they said was so easy, why aren't we all working four day weeks from h

My guess is that the same machine is a big giveaway. There's a difference between leaving a trace of your presence on a shared computer accessed by many people and a computer accessed by one or two. However, if people you know found the ac

Agreed - I've seen cases where someone obsesses about shaving milliseconds off a tight loop whilst using a profiler would reveal that the real bottleneck is the code called just before entering the loop. Premature optimisation is optimisati

I may be wrong (and I'm too lazy to search) but didn't Linus say that the git command-line is basically a series of dev tools for someone to build a "proper" interface over the top of?

Google certainly stated that there is zero margin on the Nexus 7 ( http://www.knowyourmobile.com/google/17658/google-says-there... ). I'm sure I read the same about the 4 but can't find any sources, so maybe I just confused the two.

The inverse of that is the Microsoft experience - I can remember a similar resentment slowly building across the late 90s. We all still used MS products, and jumped to their tune, but the underlying resentment meant that as soon as an alte

Britain was bankrupt after the Second World War (and in hock to the US for billions of dollars as well). As part of the attempt to rebuild the country a consensus was formed that the British state would step in and help people - hence the N
