I really believe that hacking is a good way to get students excited about systems programming and working at the systems level. I also noticed a stack smashing lab. Good stuff.

Dear [person whose name I don't know], You have a right to reject (and automatically request a new response) for any half-assed or incompetent responses. That said: I receive a lot of positive feedback on the service and in the instances wh

Writing a good cover letter is like writing a good sales letter. Show the prospect that you know who they are, you have looked at the situation (you absolutely must convince them of this), and that you have the solution. I suggest reading a

Yeah yeah. I hope it wasn't a technical acquisition, because then obviously this guy was a failure and no where near as cool as rockstar dot com bazillionaires like you. Following HN rules, if we were face to face, I would say this to you.

http://www.feedbackarmy.com really surprised me. I came up with the idea from a HN user asking for a service like it. It was on the front page of delicious the week I launched it (it was a slow news week, given). Since then it's served as

I find I have limited bandwidth for coding. In my last job, this capacity was completely used. I put my energy and my ideas into my job and absolutely nothing was left for building on the side. My current job is still technical, but I'm not

I haven't had a chance to do more than skim the article yet, but if you get a chance, read Skunk Works by Ben Rich. The book is about the shop Kelly Johnson (the subject of the article) ran that gave us all kinds of great flying toys. It's

I tried GetFriday and don't recommend hiring out to an agency like that. Recently I paid $25 for an ad on Craigslist and hired a marketing assistant to do tasks similar to the one you're describing. I'm still pretty early into my business r

Have you seen: http://www-tsujii.is.s.u-tokyo.ac.jp/~tsuruoka/postagger/ It's a POS tagger whose output is extremely close (read: identical) to the Stanford POS tagger. It's also much faster. I was able to tag a corpus of 300K sentences w

It's a little confusing but this looks like a front-end to Stanford's Part-of-Speech tagger. POS taggers do not group multi-word tokens. This would be the role of a chunker or a parser.

I learned regular expressions when writing the documentation for my Sleep programming language. They never made sense to me until I had to organize my thoughts on them in a logical way. I'm still quite happy with how that chapter turned out

I read a great article in the Harvard Business Review about what defines a profession. Their question: are managers a profession akin to Doctors and Lawyers? The author defined a professional as someone whose work you have to take on faith.

The Sleep Manual is a good source of examples, every function in the language has an example associated with it: http://sleep.dashnine.org/manual/ Another good place is the Sleep Snippets blog. I haven't updated it in a long time though:
