Government job isn't all bad. For folks like us there are many opportunities. Do you want graduate school paid for? Scholarship for service is a great program. I know the lab I was at would give civilians the options to spend 2 years in

I worked for the Air Force Research Lab once as an intern and later while in a uniform. And now I'm jumping into the startup world. Here are my thoughts: 1. If you're in a hot research area--the feeling of being a part of something bigger

I thought this was funny, I'm surprised it was downmoded so much. Granted it isn't as relevant as other high thoughts expressed on news.yc--such as the history of bagels. But... still funny.

I switched from Linux to OS X several years ago. I tend to live on the command line so my experience is a bit different. First, I installed Fink which brings dselect and friends to MacOS X. Fink let me install all the packages from Linux

PG should also read The Third Wave by Alvin Toeffler. This sounds very much like his thinking.

I'm learning this very fast (and the hard way unfortunately). I launched two technically deep projects to no response. Then I spent a week putting together a hack and people started buying.

The value proposition is ease of use. Feedback Army manages the whole process and makes results available via RSS. For someone who has never used Mechanical Turk, Feedback Army is a low risk way to try things out. I pay the Turkers prett

Not yet. You're not the first to ask for this feature. The demographics of the reviewers are slightly more women then men, mostly 20-30 year olds, and over half have college degrees.

I was worried about this too. I honestly had no idea what to expect when I first built the software. Then I ran it against my own sites and I started seeing very thoughtful feedback. This is when I felt I had something. I also posed ques

Hi there, I address this on the site FAQ. I'm delivering value by making the process to post a request simple and making the results easy to get via an RSS feed. I also do this for a low margin. If someone wants to go to Amazon directly

Typical tasks may go for $.02-$.05. I pay the workers much more than that. I experimented with different levels of payment prior to launch and had to offer more than I expected but my customers are receiving quality results, very quickly.

The initial customers of Feedback Army seem to be folks with niche websites. The kind of stuff HN would probably flag if it were posted here. Also some folks aren't as plugged into an online community and may be uncomfortable posting ther

Thanks for the encouragement. I've been meaning to play with mechanical turk for awhile and this seemed like a good idea. I'm going to hire a professional and get a snappy design going as quick as possible.

We'll see what happens. I'm watching everyones results like a hawk right now too. You may see a few responses at night (someone who just did a request already has 2) but I find its during the day when they come the quickest. If you're int

Lets assume you've never posted a job to Mechanical Turk before. Here is what you need to do: 1. Create an Amazon Web Services account 2. Figure out how much you want to spend (and don't forget to calculate Amazon's share) 3. Prepay the exa

I got bit by this when writing Sleep. I had to write my own LinkedList class that implemented a sublist as a head/tail pointer sharing the contents of the parent list. Creation of the sublist is O(n) but other operations are O(m) based on
