My solution to the excessive fiddling was Debian Stable. I've been using it since 2007-ish and it does not get in the way of anything. But I agree with you on the Mac OS thing--the only tech support I have to provide is babysitting Ti

Unsolicited advice: I suggest taking maximum paternity leave if feasible. I first took leave on my 3rd child, and feel stupid I didn't do it prior. Ironically, I was unable to convince two other colleagues to do the same. It took abo

I'm been running a mail server on my personal domain for 20 years. The hosting provider is key. One well-known hosting provider I used to use had lots of IPs on the e-mail blacklists. I found a slightly less well-known provider with

I'm completely serious here. Could you give us your definition of "number" which you would teach at this level? Please, please, I'm not trying to be an ass or anything. We could start a great conversation here.

Yup, I agree strongly. I watched the Lamport videos when on paternity leave, and really enjoyed it. The main benefit for me was that writing a spec in TLA+ allows me to "get my mind right" before writing programs. I was in love

An experienced functional programmer can learn F# in a minute, which is fine for console programs. But I tried to write a basic GUI program in F# on Linux and gave up after I reached my googling limit.

I have the same story. I ran Gentoo on all my machines for 5 years (2002-2007) and after the umpteenth update which broke printing, I switched to Debian stable and never looked back.
