And I want a terminal server. But not badly enough to pay for all those extra licences I'd need.

I'm puzzled by this. What's the acceptable alternative to "that said"? "Given the above"?

Thank you! After several attempts to download these with iTunes, I'm actually having rather more luck with this software. The videos play fine under Totem movie player on current release of Linux Mint.

Except for the fact that much of the work done at Xerox PARC during the 70s was an attempt to produce the software that such a device would run, in anticipation of the day, decades hence, when it would be practical (given Moore's law, etc).

Stuart Sutherland's book, "Irrationality", is about as concise and readable an account of these as you could wish for. My New Year's resolution (last year) was to always make a New Year's resolution to re-read it that year, because the insi

(Assuming it works the same way as Smalltalk's ensure...) a really nice aspect of this is that the resource is held open while you're in the debugger, but cleaned up when you finish debugging.

Music education is in general great at telling people what notes to play, but rather worse at supplying much intuition for why certain patterns of notes work together. You can look at a diagram that will tell you what notes go together to m

Agreed. I'm taking the online Stanford AI-class at the moment, and it's been half my lifetime since I used some of the necessary skills. Even just re-arranging a formula is slow going for me at the moment. But I am improving.

As it happens, in between first reading about ZFS dedup, and finally trying it out, I seem to have forgotten that the verify option existed. I just did "set dedup=on" - beyond that everything was whatever defaults you get on OpenIndiana bui

Yup, that's about the same proportion I found when I recently tried copying my data across to a ZFS system with the dedup switched on. I then decided to disable the dedup, because it comes at a cost - the checksum data (which would mostly b

Not much of a comparison, but JTalk aims for code compatibility with Pharo Smalltalk, whereas Clamato is a distinct dialect. Perhaps partly because of this, I felt able to work with immediately in a way I never did with Clamato, or any othe

It should be noted that outside the US, the international 3rd edition of the book (supposedly containing some undisclosed differences) can be had much cheaper. I bought a new copy from a seller in Malaysia back in April for about $50 USD.

Most likely Ruby takes the name inject from Smalltalk. (Smalltalk also uses 'collect' for map, 'select' for filter, 'reject' for an inverse filter.)

The idea of "select things with the mouse, perform operations with keys under your left hand" goes back to Doug Engelbart's NLS system. The Xerox folks will undoubtedly have known about this work. From 1968... http://www.youtube.com/watch?

Yes. In general any time you want to access the same file system by multiple different methods, the permissions issue gets rather hairy, but from the point of view of an Apple CIFS server, some well considered finesse in the GUI could be a

From my point of view it's the single biggest drawback of OpenSolaris (and descendants) as storage servers, but I see no fundamental reason why it couldn't be fixed; it simply wasn't high enough up Sun's list of priorities.

An interesting read, but it seems very strange to me that so much could be written about how Smalltalk came to be as it is without any mention of the influence of LISP.

Many designs of thermostatic shower mixers will throttle back the hot water, rather than allow the occupant to get burnt.
