I saw something similar recently when reading JSON data from postgres via Rails, which was unbelievably slow. I found the reason to be that Rails would automatically parse the JSON value into a in-memory ruby object. Since this was for a AP

I don't totally get this.. isn't it in the nature of reading via read(2) that it is possible it reads some data and then errors? If this is indeed reflected in the io.Reader.Read interface, then - regardless of who is allocating t

It was probably only by coincidence with the publishing of this link that this morning someone from IP 46.123.245.139 changed "Hans Moravec" in the wikipedia article to "Matej Moravec" . Right @gardkor?

"Adding manpower to a late software project makes it later" is not hat I even want to argue about. Discovering that a project might run late, and then doing the right thing about that is.. but how is one doing "the right thin

A manager must be able to answer the question "Are we on time? Do we need additional resources?". This happens to help a project, not to delay it. If a good team of developers estimates the effort needed for anyone task with a 20%

I have something in the works which is very similar - but is language agnostic. Pro: no need to switch to another language; Con: not high performance. We are using this in production for now over 1 year, and it helps tremendously. We are cu

This is not so much about preserving local culture and character, but just about economic circumstances of the local population. Especially the campus idea - which in London, for example, attracts tens of thousands of techbros and -sises pe

The sqlite sessions extension seems to be a good foundation for getting changelogs out of a sqlite database. It is sadly not too well known: https://www.sqlite.org/sessionintro.html

I tried to do this, with 3 different distributions, lucked out and went back to my Mac. Things I found frustrating: Bluetooth sometimes stopped working, keyboard was lagging, weird Desktop animations. I was able to find workarounds for most

The OP states: "When it’s time to send an update to the state, XOR it against the previous state, .. and send it." and this is not going to work if the previous state just isn't there. It would be easy to fix: add a base-vers

just XOR-ing doesn't cut it. The client might receive the state out of order, some updates might be missing completely - all of this must be handled somehow

I personally almost never rebase and/or squash, since I think that the information that gets lost (like: when was it started, what were mistakes along the lines) might be useful for future understanding of how the project work evolved

If you have really limited resources, then bash or one of the other shells are the only tools at hand. Embedded devices might not give you enough disk space to get perl, ruby or python.

Depending on the configuration logging can also hide race conditions, since the OS usually synchronizes access to file handles and such.

I don't see how in the example thread b's refcount could be zero, since there would exist a reference on thread a already (or else A could not create another reference) So how can that happen?

The reality, however, is that depending on where they are many users don't have an LTE connection to begin with. My personal experience is that every so often a page begins to load, then shows text invisibly, then loads ads, and only a

I am not calling to ignoring the async nature of computing in general, I am calling for better tooling. The Linux (and other OS'es) kernel handles I/O asynchronously, yet processes using open(2) + friends work quite well and are u

As for enterprise solutions: I seriously doubt that PGP is a solution there, because recipients must have a pgp based solution as well. OTOH they can easily run S/MIME and feel fine... own-mailbox, at least, seems to support a mode whe
