Perhaps there might be a better systemic way of avoiding e.g. water damage without resorting to single-use plastics. Maybe reusable water-proof shipping containers, or requiring postal workers to remove their tear ducts.

Individual investors would probably not buy these. It's a lot harder to keep $100m under the proverbial mattress: not FDIC-insurable, literal cash requires guards, etc. And anything else you buy to store the value (gold for instance)

Light and refrigeration were the earliest uses of electricity. Add simple communication (radio transmission/reception), and that's enough to keep you going for quite awhile.

From "Debt, The First 5000 years": L. Frank Baum’s book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which appeared in 1900, is widely recognized to be a parable for the Populist campaign of William Jennings Bryan, who twice ran for president on t

Yeah, I have 15 years of C++ experience, but not since 2012. So with C++11 and C++17 (and soon C++20) my skills have not aged well, even though I can still write C++03 just fine. It's no wonder 'senior' devs prefer to use p

1. Stop disassociating with everyone whose opinions you disagree with. Include the "wrong and stupid" in your communities, as long as they're not toxic. 2. Learn about how people actually change their minds, instead of tryin

When the percentage of 'wrong or stupid' people is low enough, say below 1%, I would agree. Maybe even 10%. But the number of people who are wrong or stupid in this way is still quite high; at least 25-30% in the US, possibly mo

What if the anxiety seems to come from a place of the entire human society being out of balance? I pretty much think if you're not feeling anxious, you're not paying attention.

Gosh, I wonder if our current civilisation has earned its enemies? I mean the internet is cool and all, but our fantastic civilisation can't manage to use it to coordinate a meaningful response to the existential crisis of our era...

I have both done this and advised other people to time their departure like this. I take a few weeks off between jobs and I only had to get screwed the one time before I learned I had to take that into account.
