It got my hopes up that they had backed off so they could solve their problems before returning to subject the kernel to their language.

You don't generally need specific versions of GCC or Clang to build it I'm pretty sure.

Sometimes it's nice to know that something will run and compile reliably far into the future. That's a nice thing to have, and wide support for the language and its relatively unchanging nature make it reliable.

Sure, but the reason tends to be that if you want something to run everywhere, C is your best bet.

Correct. C has a mostly standardized ABI, Rust does not. C has a spec, Rust does not. That matters in things like kernels.

That's how it feels to me. There are crucial issues, namely that there is no spec and there is only one implementation. I don't know why Linus is ok with this. I'd be fine with it if those issues were resolved, but they aren&

What does this practically mean for Linux? Will core parts of it depend on Rust? How closely linked are drivers? Rust in Linux always worried me because there is currently only one stable backend (LLVM) and only one compiler implementation

They want to make sure the runtime they depend on continues to be maintained. It's still niche and new, so its continued existence isn't as sure as something like Go.

Anything that is funded by venture capital WILL become worse. You can complain all you want about things that don't have infinite funding having issues, but they'll probably just stay at the same level or get slightly better over

I think the Twitter format sucks in both cases, but having central, algorithmically-curated feeds are just bad for people psychologically. They just created another Twitter clone with the same problems. The only difference is fewer "na

That's actually a very good way of putting it. One of the things I wanted to show in the article was that a lot of the promises of tech optimism were kept, but the other consequences were ignored. What you bring up is a very large cons
