To be clear, I (like many of you) have poured countless hours into John Carmack's games, and stand in awe of his work. I also have considerably less capability than most HN users in programming, etc. So I may have a large pro-Carmack

I play my games through steam, but often buy through Humble or GOG when I can. Mind, I can't always do that (and will buy through Steam when there's a sale on), but it's insurance when I can. For really old games, I usually j

If I could find a good one, I just might buy it, too. My AGS-101 isn't exactly an ideal system. But then, a GBASP might be cheaper...

I didn't learn this in kindergarten, but I did learn about Duff's Device in the 7th grade (as it turns out, the Jargon File makes for pretty good reading during boring classes). Never had cause to implement it, though, and never s

It works, all right, but they bind game logic to framerate, and then don't lock the framerate , so you have to go in and set a framrate lock or the whole thing will be unplayable.

I've been reading about the gameboy's architecture and internals (in the hopes of making a game with it), and it's pretty amazing how much specialized hardware there was in earlier generations of consoles, especially compared

Yeah. Compare this to the 90s games I've been playing: I can still take a copy of Q3A or UT from '99 and install it on my computer (although why you wouldn't use the IOQ3/UTPG patches is beyond me). Ditto for Doom and De

I never did the column layout, but I knew about the bit flips for control and shift from both Tom Scott's video on reading ASCII, and from reading about the Meta key.

I was a kid in the early 2000s, so my perspective is somewhat different to many here. I was a CP member, and played fairly religiously for a few years. It was one of the first things I got an account for on the internet. Farewell CP. We wil

You know, I'm starting to think that multithreading may not be the best idea in an environment explicitly not designed for it, and we should be using other approaches, it the latency requirements of the application make that possible.

Most of these are by design. Is there anybody else here who thinks that DSSSL was a nicer language than XSLT? Mind, it couldn't do most of these things either, but it was basically functional Scheme. And I'll take Scheme over... w

There are still a few (emulated) ITS systems running online. In particular, there's UP, which you can SUPDUP into from your home machine, and even get an account on, if you ask nicely. Also, if you're interested in fiddling with I
