As I wrote there is lot of hidden stuff such as taxes payed by employer plus social and health insurance. I don't care how it is called officially. It is calculated as percentage from income and one may go to jail for not paying it. There a

If you are using Java, you may want to try MapDB. It uses memory mapped files and has interesting performance. Redis server protocol implementation is on roadmap.

Typical american self-centered bu*it. Streets filled with homeless people and unemployment over 25%. Yet somehow world poverty would magically disappear if entire world population would move to New York or California.

I had similar dilemma at second semester at university. I changed my career to business and do astronomical software as hobby. Now I probably write more astronomical software than if I would stay at field. It is more relaxing and I can focu

I want to study astronomy. After first year I found it to be a dead end. So I went to private sector, got nice 9-5 job and hack astronomical software over evenings. More freedom, more money and my software is still used by thousands of ast

I think the key here is environment. If you are in startup, writing thousand lines per day, then sure tests are not for you. But guy, who takes over code after startup is sold, will have different opinion.

Yes, but it also means that Google innovation was not worth two million workers. All Google did was better results over Altavista. It is 10,000 searches a day, each search saves client 10 minutes (thanks to better result ordering), that is

I don't like assumption 'Google'=='search engine'. There was Altavista and dozens other search engines before Google. Work force is grossly overestimated. 99% queries could be filtered with simple encyclopedia lookup. For rest some sort of

Not really, trust me. I have great open-source project, but I am keeping it quiet. After I will publish it, it explodes and floods me with issues/questions. Right now I have low number of highly motivated users and it keeps my backlog full.
