Smart people I know also have a critical thinking. They verify their ideas and learn from their mistakes. What author describes seems more like management issue.

I use web less and less. It just does not have that good experience, compared to dedicated devices and apps. Also it requires constant connection, way too much hassle while traveling. For video I use dedicated apps with off-line caching. F

In my experience those houses were mainly compared to traditional well build stone houses, that's how they got bad reputation.

I would not call it *tocracy but business model. Company can pay under-market salary, if it inflates ego of its employees and make them feel special. It already works in science, fashion, medicine...

Soviets did similar stuff in 70-ties. I think it is very old experiment (possibly 19th century).

The problem is not the first reaction of taking children away, I totally agree with that. Problem is to get children back after initial claims are not confirmed. They ignore other family members (grandparents, spouse) and just keep piling u

There are many stories how local Social Services kidnap children of immigrants without any chance for repeal. No evidence, just single accusation. I think I will pass.

I think best way with startup is to choose cheap base to stay permanently and travel a bit. I just returned from New York, planning trip to Berlin next month and hike in Anatolia after that. In between I will enjoy summer house on Greek bea

Not sure why you are in California. Health care is bloody expensive there, somewhere else you could afford house AND hospital. And other states offer many outdoor activities as well.

Perhaps it is a good news. Junk airplanes means fewer wars. I am sure EU and US could make decent airplane very fast when some credible threat emerges.

Does anyone else experience poor disk IO performance on AWS? I ran 'dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/file' and the speed is between 1-10 MB/s. I would expect hundreds of MB/s if they advertise SSD.

Plus most sci-fi stuff such as hyperdrive is old news. Clarke, Asimov and most hard scifi are from 1950ies. Some stuff such as antigravity goes back to Wells and Kepler.

Filesystem needs to shutdown and sync correctly. I think best way is to make writes slower and slower. FS can still close, and admin will notice something is wrong.

I live in Europe and my client is American company. That is pretty much only possible arrangement since they have no presence here. Also being employee would mean to give-up my copyright, which I am not that keen to do.

Perhaps we should define what is full-time employee. I am consultant, but I have only single customer/employer who reimburses my expenses without much questions. And I make similar money compared to my old corporate 9-5 job, adjusted f

Article quotes 6 digits numbers to exterminate mosquitoes over large areas. I believe that is within reach of local governments. Even Kickstarter campaign could fund it. So the question is more when, rather then if.

People in open-space are more sick, paid sick leave ensures that employer is not passing his cost savings on me. Non-paid sick leave indicates dysfunctional company and lack of trust (at least in Europe). It is a principle. Open-space was m
