I don't think you spend all 4 hours up front, friend. In my experience you're going to want a sharp axe later in the process, once you've dulled it. Not sure if that ruins the analogy or not.

"maintain a home server" in this case roughly means "park a headless Mac mini (or laptop or RPi) on your desk" And you can use a local LLM if you want to eliminate the cloud dependency.

Why would we think businesses will always make the right move? They'll blunder. They'll do it even harder in the absence of competition.

I started my own business when I left tech. It's a bar. I do my own mechanic work, but I have old trucks. I would never sign up to work on modern vehicles and the entitled customers trying to get one over on you. I drove a route (not d

Modern dumb people have more ability to affect things. Modern technology, equal rights, voting rights give them access to more control than they've ever had. That's my theory, anyway.

Same. When I first saw it, I couldn't believe that was possible in the browser. It makes me want to investigate that style of application. I think it even works offline.

Nobody has responded to me with anything about how authors are harmed, so I don't really get who we're protecting here. It feels more like we just want to punish people, particularly rich people, particularly if they get away with

Yes, but getting your hands on the material isn't a very interesting legal question IMO. Whether you can train your LLM on it is a very interesting question. I've personally never been in favor of punishing people for downloading

This really has fuck-all to do with copyright though, correct? If you can't tell how the content is before you read it, it could be written by a monkey.

And punishing them in the normal manner will be an incredibly small slap on the wrist, and do absolutely nothing to help us find out what will play out in court regarding a fair-use defense on training AI with copyrighted material.

That's what I do, personally. But you call it "stealing," others call it "copying." Stealing takes, from someone, something they own.

What are we actually worried about happening? Are AI-written books getting published? If they start out-competing humans, is that bad? According to most naysayers, they can't do anything original. Are people asking the AI for books? An
