How is there gradient descent or even a gradient in biological mutations? If anything there could be an analogy to undirected trial & error as in genetic algorithms.

What‘s needed is regulation. A lot of regulation that is not questioned based on some free market fundamentalism. That‘s all. Given that, capitalism works fine.

Is this the same in Europe? I doubt it and at least in Germany an engineer (even a software engineer) is someone who has studied a technical subject at university. It has nothing to do with liability here.

Alaska is part of the US. Ukraine is not part of Russia. Everything else in your comment is also factually wrong or even a deliberate lie just like the ones you spread in your other replies here.

For Apple, it‘s not about attracting new customers but about reducing costs (on the software side and also in licensing costs for the CPU) to increase profits.

It may not have an idea of a picture of a bear. But it certainly knows all kinds of words that would describe that bear. And it relates those to the bear and also to other things. So I would argue that there is some „idea“. It‘s just not a

Africa has many problems it will not be like China any time soon. And automation? Well, a lack of cheap labor will make more expensive automation as well as research worthwhile. So more will be automated.

Why would you hang your career on the fate of a single language? Most of the knowledge transfers just fine between languages. Over a career you can become an expert in several of them.

Last year the founder of Shazam told his story at a conference. That‘s a hit app. The effort that went into it is mind boggling. Far more than ever could possibly go into a single hit song.

It helps a lot with refactoring and many other things even early in the project. For example I‘m using TypeScript with a GraphQL code generator. Now let‘s assume I add a new value to a GraphQL enum. I run codegen, then fix everything until

But I rarely use classes in TypeScript. I do think of things as data transformations but the types certainly help a lot.

I wish it would be possible to have better studies for that. I believe that static typing has huge benefits as software scales. I also believe that the type system of TypeScript is actually stronger in practice than the Java or C# one (desp

It will be similar to offshoring. Yeah, if you can make a precise spec or if you programmers are not willing or capable to think for themselves then it fits. Let me make quonn‘s law: Any software job that cannot be offshored currently canno

True but not fully convincing. For example, someone who owns a house on the coast is likely worse off and less flexible than someone who merely rents and apartment. Both can in fact move. It‘s perhaps not a problem with elites in this case.

I never got a new phone because the battery was not good enough anymore (and it can be replaced, just not by yourself). Apple charges about $50, obviously 10x cheaper than a new phone.
