The more I read about it, the less I am convinced that capitalism is all ponies and manna from heaven, like some here believe. And it's close to its end, anyway, at least as we know it. No, I am not some raving conspiracy theorist. Automati

The backup strategy, in my experience, is the first or second thing you need to be thinking about when you set up a server, service or anything IT-related. The first thing I ask when my boss tells me to set up something new: how are we goin

Strange -- it seems faster in Linux to me than in Windows, though I've never done any formal benchmarks. Haven't had any crashing problems, either.

I use Firefox 3.0.5 on Linux. I have 10,000RPM drives in RAID 0, so my computer is always faster to open a local app than to open a webpage.

This is a well-known psychological bias, though I forget the name of it. Blaming external factors on your failure, but blaming internal characteristics on the failures of others -- conservatives seem to be guilty of this more often than oth

Windows 7 seems like warmed-over Vista to me. The days of Microsoft innovation -- if they ever existed -- are over. What's most notable about Windows 7 is the ideas they've taken from Compiz, which are certainly great on Linux.

I have difficulty using web-based apps because they are just too slow for me. I am a bit of a speed freak, tweaking and overclocking, etc. -- but I do value my time and I've never used a web-based app whose speed pleased me. If I have a cho

I tried switching to a laptop-only existence several years ago. Didn't work for me. I have an Apple 23" Cinema Display as my primary monitor, and a 19" Hyundai as my second monitor. I'd be lost and be much less productive without this scree

At least it'll solve the financial and economic crises. At this point, I am not sure it matters what destroys the world, as we're bound to do it one way or the other. If not the actual world in toto, then at least ourselves.

I find any computer without at least a 20" screen unusable, so no notebook as a desktop replacement for me. My custom-built desktop is also about 1.5-2x faster than any laptop currently made, so also no thanks in that respect.

Like mortgages, credit card debt that has been securitized has leverage on top of leverage, so even an 8% default rate will do very bad things to banks and other companies who have purchased it using leverage. (Often, the securitized produc

As long as large conglomerates with oodles of cash and lawyers control the debate, the system will get worse. How to change that? I haven't a clue.

This is a naked money grab by Comcast, but geared more to the future than now. Now, most people won’t use 250GB a month. In the future — say 10 or 12 years — most people will use ten times that. This gambit is just to get people used to met
