Just in this thread I have one person saying that I should avoid flakes and you are telling me it will save me. I think we proved my point.

Thanks for that clarification. My point was mainly that I was being led down paths that were talking about home manager which was something I didn’t want in my system. Nix, nixos, home manager, flakes, shell.nix … they all do different thin

Your example looks great! Indeed I trolled every piece of nix documentation I could find -- it was the only way to figure out what I should be doing. Here's the simplest example of an utter failure when I tried nix: installing ruby 2.

Based on other comments like this, I gave it a try. Be prepared to sink dozens and dozens of hours learning the language, it’s features, and switching everything over. Be prepared to get stuck when you are required to use an old version of

I’ve never used org-mode but have heard enough about it to be intrigued. If there’s no spec and it’s “whatever the emacs implementation is” then I think there is plenty of room for a plaintext alternative.

My wife is a researcher and started delving into doing her own statistical analysis. It's be fun (and frustrating) learning R with her. I agree that dplyr and the tidyverse are some fantastic packges for a software engineer who think

I’ve seen game devs advertise that their game works natively on Linux and is seen as a positive. My guess is if steam deck takes off there will be more games trying to build natively on Linux.

I’ve been using corne (40% ortho split) for software development for over a year now. It is most definitely the way to go. Having common symbols ()<>{} be on a layer on the home row is so fantastic for typing speed.

Ruby has a severely lacking ecosystem imo and since it is virtually a language to support rails, so I find it hard to believe it will pick up anymore traction than it already has. Static typing, lack of static analysis tooling, and autoform

I've been using `pass` for years. Yes it's more manual but I'm in full control of the password management. There's also a mobile app for ios and ipad that work just fine, including storing OTP.
