There’s a lot of discussion here on how (or even whether) a ‘reflectometer’ (I had to look up what that even meant) works. However, I’m more interested in the things I do understand, and in this case, my question is: considering the fact

This is one of the reasons I annoy people by following Wolfram’s convention in Mathematica of using square braces to denote arguments passed to a function: f ( x )= fx = f × x while f [ x ] means “apply the function f to the argument

Interesting factoid: David Bradley implemented the CTRL-ALT-DEL “three-finger salute” to aid in debugging the original IBM PC way back in 1980 so that he and the development team could soft-reset the machine without needing to endure the sl

Knowing that some schools and universities are testy to use GIMP because it’s a derogatory term, I’m wondering how “SOD” will fare. “Sod off” and “you’re a real sod” are not exactly terms of endearment and are very much still in current usa

I’m one of those people who is entirely happy wit Apple’s default apps, but the opportunity to change “default apps” (such as the browser, email client, and so forth) is one of the things I have always looked forward to and am hoping that w

As somebody in that thread points out, using division you can trivially construct an identity by taking the definition of φ and replacing any integer with expressions such as π÷π for 1 and (e+e+e+e+e)/e for 5.

This is a stunningly bad piece of writing, wherein the author ‘criticises’ pieces of work for not foreseeing what came later. Star Trek was written by writers in the 1960s and addresses issues that were prevalent in the 1960s; Star Trek:

That kind of misses the whole “tipping point” aspect of climate change, wherein crossing a certain threshold is an (essentially) irreversible act. One could argue that any realistic scenario for WWIII would (unfortunately) involve a broad t

Without a specific reference to which domain we are speaking about, the statement “the EU needs the UK more” is very close to being utterly meaningless (and is typical of a whole slew of extremely woolly posturing on the subject). It’s beco

If it’s not algebricaly proven don’t call it an ‘ identity ’... even if a calculator were to confirm it to some arbitrary number of digits, that’d just be a more-or-less accurate approximation. ‘Identity’ denotes a far more profound relatio

Hehe... the great thing of bringing up a requirement on Hacker News is that one will always find somebody whose instant reaction is “you don’t need that [because I don’t need it]”. For various reasons it’s something I want . Do I need it

I’d really like to have a capable Arm 64 workstation. Unfortunately there aren’t many options — and this one really doesn’t tickle my fancy. I’ve been looking into Nvidia’s Xavier NX of late but, of course, it’s not an SBSA-compliant system

I find the NumWorks to be a lovely little calculator but Omega really needs to provide some serious symbolic ( i.e. ‘CAS’) functionality. It’s all fair and square that the official Epsilon firmware doesn’t feature CAS to appease the examin

The examiner’s client program is likely a browser that connects to a web-hosted system, and with the exception of Safari, other browsers do not (yet) handle HEIC natively nor even gracefully.

That totally misses the point though, because if the website only validates on the basis of extension and accepts the format in an unrecognised format, the backend won’t know how to handle it anyway. There’s no point uploading a HEIC file
