It's not a genetic disposition to corruption but a tolerance developed through overexposure. When most cops are corrupt there is less outrage over one corrupt cop because that is normal. People learn to accept what is all around them. Pa

The author here comes across as too biased and passionate to be taken seriously. I understand that he wants to hype up his story to draw in readers but his "The sky is falling" attitude obscures any of the real issues and considerations in

Combining Pages with LaTeXiT ( http://ktd.club.fr/programmation/latexit_en.php ) is my current favorite setup. Pages takes some getting used to but after prolonged use I find it easier to use than Word or Writer. Word is a pain under OS X

Not only that, but it seems like he was penalized for very common quick to fix errors. I'm not the best programmer ever but I always forget to initialize a data structure or forget a semicolon. I always catch the error when compiling or t

I miss TechTV. Patrick Norton in a kilt destroying a PC with a sledgehammer was classier than a pistol.

It is far easier to put garbage cans on streetcorners than change how people behave or ban common packaging.

Exactly. Would anyone who posts here willingly visit 4chan? Slashdot may be one exception though. Trolling increased there until Digg and Reddit became popular. I think many of the slashdot trolls left for Digg and Reddit, and the amount

Actually stocks might not be the way to go. I'd hand myself a sports almanac and start betting. As long as Biff doesn't get his hands on it.

The "Beta Culture" in the article may be derived from or justified by the release early and often mindset of open source software. This makes sense for open source and web 2.0 products which are easily updated. The product testing is crow

Dostoevsky said, "All happy families are alike; all unhappy families are unhappy in their own way." The same can be applied to the economy. We aren't likely to repeat the mistakes that led to the Great Depression. Instead we find new and i

Buy Google stock. Sell everything before Oct 2008. Profit. In college I would tell myself not to worry as much about grades, but to focus on a few projects of my own. Take more internships in different fields.

Since timezones are a problem, try 10 minutes chosen randomly each hour. 5/6 of the time we could procrastinate at will, but a new.yc binge of ~30 min or more would be interrupted. This could be an interesting experiment.

I'm starting to think that this is a universal truth that the best classes never count towards your major. If the only people in there want to be there, including the prof, everyone learns more.

The problem is that without the huge income from sports there would be no money for the scholarships in the first place. In fact I attended LSU on an academic scholarship that was partly funded by the athletic department. Yes, it's not fai

As an academic in training(phd student), I would never want to be a football coach at a top school. The hours they have to work to remain competitive are insane. One bad season or embarrassing loss to a rival and you will be fired. I'll t
