I don't agree with this. Yes, the guy isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, that much is clear. Still, if an intern can delete prod, you wouldn't say that the problem is that he wasn't careful enough: that's a massiv

See, the problem when making predictions is that the timeframe is effectively the prediction . I don't know what will happen. When I saw GPT-3 I thought it was hot garbage and never took it seriously. As a result I now have large erro

GP is exaggerating, but this thread in particular is really bad. It's healthy to be skeptical, and it's even healthier to be skeptical of openai, but there are commenters who clearly have no idea of what IMO problems are saying th

I'm not talking about tools in particular, I completely agree that they're basically fungible, and for "serious" stuff it's probably still better to use the web interface directly as you have more control over the c

I agree, but with the caveat that it's probably a bad time to fall asleep at the wheel. I'm very much a "nothing ever happens" kind of guy, but I see a lot of people who aren't taking the time to actually understand

Do these tools still make sense when you can have an agent-type setup like Claude Code or any of the competitors do that kind of low level work? I know that vibe coding isn't quite there yet, but I wonder if low-code solutions like tho

To be fair you're picking an example that's extremely finicky about indices. It's probably the hardest basic algorithm to write down without errors. Up there with Hoare partition.

Claude Code is definitely more agentic, but you can use it in a variety of ways. In Plan Mode it won't touch the code, and by default it asks you to accept every single diff. With IDE integration you can definitely just highlight some

The complaint is that type coercion exists at all. It solves no problems and creates several out of thin air. Or are you arguing that ceteris paribus you'd rather not have the language throw an error or just propagate undefined?

Not even that, see LMArena. They vaguely gesture in the general direction of the model being good, but between contamination and issues with scoring they're little more than a vibe check.

The only everyday context where numbers on that scale are commonly used is money/finance, and it's pretty universal in that context that 1e9=B=billion, 1e12=T=trillion. This long scale/short scale distinction gets posted a lo

The $20 one doesn't have Opus. (This might or might not matter but it's a difference). There's also a $100 version that's indeed the same as the $200 one but with less usage.

This is 100% the rational response I'd give to OP, but I can't deny I feel a bit of the same unease. It's mostly that this technology is really... weird, I think. I struggle to put that into words if I'm being honest.

The Mizohata-Takeuchi conjecture is a statement in the form "For all <x> (a bunch of math)". Showing that there exists an x such that the statement is false disproves the conjecture. She found a counterexample.

Yeah, there's a similar formula for all homogeneous linear recurrences if I'm not mistaken, but you can't evaluate it naively with floating point arithmetic. We can view (1 + sqrt(5)) and (1 - sqrt(5)) as elements of Z[sqrt(5
