The title is wrong. The title should be "How I ended up successful in tech through the hard work and perseverance of my mother and myself, with a side dish of good fortune."

One possible solution is the constitutional right to an attorney in civil cases as well as in criminal, but I don't know how you'd protect that against abuse.

The problem is that a sufficiently wealthy adversary can fund a case with little to no merit and the worst case outcome is having to pay the attorney's fees of the defendant. In the best case you can just bleed your opponent dry. This

I think it feels like a "more accurate satire" because it mixes things that are overexaggerated and underexaggerated, and only by a small amount in either direction. So some of the strange realities (an executive Rollerblading int

It's relevant because it's a $3b sale of a data visualization software company, which is more than any YC acquisition and bigger than all but a handful of YC companies.

This reminded me of a question I've always had... there's always a lot of mass of the food not accounted for in the Fat/Carbohydrates/Protein/Fiber. For example, a can of food that weighs 454g net might only have 15

The problem here isn't Peter Thiel destroying Gawker, because this was a case where Gawker did do wrong and was found liable for damages. In effect, Thiel paid for Hogan's lawyer the way the government pays for criminal defendants

You would have to have a direct link to your counterparty. Otherwise you'd have to account for why your upstream ISP had record of traffic that you cannot produce any records for.

The government has an easy answer to this, data retention laws, which are already common in many countries. The more companies start doing this, the quicker the laws will be passed, and the stricter they will be when they are. It's a t

It would be more interesting if the emoji descriptions were user-generated, because individual subgroups often use the same emojis to mean different things (or an emoji just takes on a popular meaning of its own).

The price per megabyte is high but the price per SIM card per month is very reasonable. Twilio has never competed on price, it's competed on being the absolute easiest service to integrate with the rest of your infrastructure. Looks li

Very doubtful that this will lead to a lower-total-cost-of-ownership phone for anyone vs. buying the $30 Android phone and replacing it when it breaks. More likely that this will become a standard compute/networking interface into a bu

Yes, what I'm saying is that the incentive disadvantage is much bigger than the data disadvantage. Apple Maps is worse than Google Maps because Apple cannot justify the kinds of investments in product that Google can.

The smaller userbase of Apple services compared to Google Maps/Spotify creates not only a data disadvantage but an incentive disadvantage. Apple needs to make Maps or Music or iMessage only good enough to keep you on the iPhone. Google

It's hard to blame them for that, though. They made a blog with a 140-character limit and it became one of the most valuable companies in the world. Who knows what it will become if they fiddle with anything?

I can imagine that once a person has more demands on their time, their willingness take the quick and dirty approach increases (TV babysitter, bribes for chores, etc)

That's true. What I should have said was "market size problems." The size of the market depends on how many parents think that this would be a good idea to use with their kids.
