This is a hot take. But an interesting one. I applaud the author for publishing. Passionate product people (designers, PMs, but engineers as well) are hard to find, hard to train, hard to empower in this day and age, in the sea of tech work

Sometimes it's hard for me to imagine how the current teenagers, and people in their 20s apparently, grew up with what I always considered Web 2.0 technology and smart phones — in my mind innovations of my time. They OTOH basically had

This could be why programming is seen as arts. Artists have to show a portfolio or a reel, that takes hundreds of hours to create. And then great style, a good story and crisp explanations on top of that. The awful thing though is that you’

There isn’t a more accurate description of “corporate agile” than exactly this. It’s a joke, and the joke’s on us.

OP will take that experience with them forever (technical, tactical, emotional perhaps). It’s a huge learning experience, many would suffer for. OTOH, the hedge fund will probably fail to profit from the project soon enough: A. they fired t

They’re operating like a startup, which like you say should be perfectly fine. Can’t pretend like a giant when you don’t have the bank account for that. Though they’re also selling a developer ecosystem. A lock-in. Are you willing to bet yo

Think before trying out unlawful exploits like others suggested, please. In a liberal world, offering money might do the trick. Not always, but worth the mention.

We read the same article. I interpret less reaction to rewards as being more appreciative. It’s deep, but hear me out. Less reaction means they (and myself included once) have the same expectation as the ones giving the reward, it being an

So put plainly, hire people who come from low income families because they appreciate rewards more, and stay hungry for longer.

Share the same sentiment. React has gotten weird. It feels like they took a perfectly done design and awkwardly pushed it over its boundaries. (They got away with hooks, but this time it’s different) Funny thing is they say it’s for the DX

Ah… classic bell curve. I believe it is necessary to reach the center of the bell first to grasp what simplicity means.

While I agree unstructured code is unscalable after a certain point, I personally don’t find newbie code hard to add to, change, or understand. It’s still straightforward, that being a two-edged sword, in that it simply lacks abstractions t

Ergonomic multi-core multithreading is already solved, for me at least, with ProcessPoolExecutor.map(). I wonder what advantages this direction brings to the table.

I don’t get it either. While they’re at it, why not give DeepMind and OpenAI access to military resources to see whether their models can keep peace better than an army. At least that’s not on civilian territory.

I might work in a “Hacker News bubble” but this type of story in 2023 actually surprises me. Software development has become product-driven, some may say even a little too much, and data-driven, both progress around user and stakeholder fee

This is the way. Later on tech-savvy freelance writers are contracted to write more “professional” articles and documentation. It’s fluff but necessary to build the brand. IMHO the person who did the external API design should be able to co

AFAIK V8 does make use of threads internally via libuv in order to make truly concurrent system calls. GPU device comms should fit perfectly in that design.

I tend to disagree. Estimate this more complex situation: Integrate vendor B’s API where you don’t have prior experience with vendor B’s product let alone their API, and where our system is built specifically around vendor A’s API and workf
