Do you have kids? I can't tell you how many times I've come across a drained laptop in my house sitting right next to a disconnected power supply. That happens with any brand of laptop, but after switching my kids to Macbooks, that MagSafe

Maybe the future of all desktop OSes is to run in a VM. I run Windows in a VM to sandbox it and ease rolling back if the system gets unstable or crufty. I run Linux natively, but like to check out new distros or test upgrades in a VM. It's

rdiff-backup ( http://rdiff-backup.nongnu.org/ ) is very mature and efficient, using the rsync algorithm to store incrementals and save bandwidth. I use it for automated daily local/remote backups. I regularly use it to back up VMs. Restore

To paraphrase you, just putting books in hands doesn't automatically educate them, either. There have been, and always will be, challenges in education. But for those who are willing and able to make good use of the resources available to t

Yes, wicd is great and continues to get better. After having no automated wireless support for so long, it's easier to manage wireless connections on my laptop with linux (Slackware, no less!) than it is with Windows (XP), and almost as pai

This was a failure on the part of the executives in doing their jobs. It doesn't take an engineer to recognize that they needn't be concerned with machine names (unless the names were so bad that public disclosure would result in a PR night

The author didn't convince me that the company was successful or that the CFO's move was political, and even provides information that suggests the opposite (the company wasn't making a profit and the CFO needed to address critical areas th

You'll get no argument from me that a good investment is money well spent, whether it's free soda or a company fleet of Lamborghinis. But what problem is the CFO in the article trying to solve? The author claims the startup is "fairly succe

We're talking about soda, but in a culture ingrained with perks, there's no limit to waste, especially as you move up the ladder. In hard times, it sucks to see your boss fly first class instead of coach, take a limo instead of a cab, consi

The company has to succeed, my stock has to go up in value, and as the company grows in size it can get much better deals on things like health insurance than I can alone. $200/yr spent on soda doesn't benefit me in any way at all. I'll dri

In a startup, every expense is potentially a total loss, whether it's for a computer, a soda or a consulting fee. But when a business establishes a revenue stream that is insufficient to cover expenses and generate a profit, it has to diffe

In my opinion, the "best" work also scores highly across the criteria. In my experience, the voting body increasingly ignores criteria as it gets larger. Perhaps the quality of the results would improve if the voting body had to rank the cr

I wonder how long this will last. "Fair" voting approaches such as preferential ranking attempt to address the challenge of producing an outcome that is agreeable to everyone, which is subtly different than recognizing the "best". This will
