So don't people just publish client libs that handle the details for you? Sometimes, but oftentimes sharding issues are unique enough that they require custom solutions when the backend technology does not support it natively.

One such bad situation would be if you have numeric keys that you shard based on a mod 2. You do this because you want to distribute data between 2 servers, so one will get all even keys and the other will get the odd keys. A few months do

Am I wrong in finding a happy medium between multiple technologies? No, you are correct. The main source of contention lies in people trying to use a particular technology outside of its comfort zone. Many in the NoSQL crowd suggest tha

Just to clarify, client-side == application-side, or the application as a client of the database. Is client-side hashing really that big a deal? No, it's not that big of a deal, but I tend to feel that any layer of logic that can be don

It makes the assumption that everything that can be known about a system is already known No, it does not. I'm not sure where you extracted that from in my comment. Also, if you are aware that your environment was terrible, it seems pres

To me, your comment spells out quite conclusively that you have not been part of a good pairing environment. It is good that you see the knowledge transfer benefits, but I much prefer thinking of it as knowledge distribution rather than

Look, at that kind of scale, you're going to have problems with any solution to any problem. Handling that kind of scale is going to be expensive no matter what solution you implement, whether it's map/reduce or flat files or some other so

The interview is disappointingly light. Not that I was expecting to read a bunch of Sequoia's secrets, but given their previously good judgment in tough times, more specifics would have been nice.

I could actually see it working in the other direction. Things like YSlow highlight good technique in a (seemingly) objective way. As for your issue, I would hope that if a client is savvy enough to check with these tools, they could also

Little disconcerting that they plaster 'you will not be billed' all over and then you see a charge on your card from them. It's only $1.10, and obviously just a verification charge, but still a bit frustrating. Also, the billing screen on

I've worked quite a bit with both LH and Tracker and I can easily say that the latter is far superior, especially in terms of the UI. It takes a bit of getting used to, but once you have your feet wet it is quite smooth. What makes it the

I'll second this. If you feel it is fitting for HN, then it's perfectly fine to submit it yourself. There are no rules against that, and if you put in the work to write a thought-provoking piece, it deserves attention.
