Agreed. This article is an exception that proves a rule that a lot of tech writing is lacking something. Maybe it's volume over substance (ironically discussed in this article: low quality views vs. engaged users)

I think at the core, these are different companies. FB is a social network, groupon is a deal site. The skill set to dominate these two spaces is very different. Agreed, they have a huge distribution channel but so does for instance Target

I dont fully agree with the author's view that between the two, CN failed because of facebook's "simplicity", "the Harvard factor", and some basic features. The difference between the two teams is much greater. My thoughts on why CN failed:
