It has never been demonstrated scientifically that gender modification surgeries are medically necessary, or beneficial in the long term. I wonder if proponents of considering it a medical necessity feel the same way about breast augmentat

The most prominent difference between the two platforms is age. The median age on Reddit has dropped into the teens. I believe that is why the Reddit redesign specifically hid more of the comments - to both hide the rampant low-effort comme

There is plenty of debate still about Dark Energy. ...and it's been getting stronger lately as we've been finding more evidence that the visible universe is not homogeneous as we thought - which is one of the pieces of evidence fo

Exactly. If I am from Turkey, earn a Turkish Lira for salary, and pay for stuff locally in Turkish Lira, you might be tempted to think that currency exchange moves don't impact me. That would be very very wrong, and one trip to any st

One day, some crypto somewhere will figure out a way to implement a distributed mechanism to dynamically adjust the money supply to maintain a reasonable 0.5%-1% inflation rate per year.

A small amount of inflation (single digits per year), is a feature, not a bug. It prevents the boom-bust of people hoarding currency, and forces the currency itself to be used efficiently. If the gov't can maintain a bond rate below t

Treating "Germany" as one monolithic entity that can thereby be accused of hypocrisy, is a childish oversimplification. Nations are composed of myriads of groups, people, interests - some support gov't surveillance, and some

Death is not the only societal cost, and the study above only looked at first-order numbers of deaths. Additionally, it's difficult to measure the cost of in-action when responding to an erratic phenomenon like terrorism.

It worked in Paris a few years ago. Two suicide bombers were stopped at security and detonated their suicide vests - no other people were killed besides the terrorists.

This is not exactly true. Keeping your infectious host alive longer, will increase transmission. This is why there is an evolutionary pressure for all diseases to keep your host alive, and why some diseases/parasites ultimately evolve

I don't see this sort of joy-riding as a material competition to what SpaceX is doing. It's not even clear to me that that is their objective. These sub-orbital flights are not interesting - scientifically nor engineeringly.
