I think that this is a good summary of the problem. The incentives seems misaligned. And I am not sure that paying for content would magically make this disappear. Or if so, then the companies should offer completely different products to p

You are not your startup. And defining risky endeavours like entrepreneurship only by its outcome, is setting a trap for yourself. "Giving up" never got the recognition it needs. You cannot pursue new goals without letting go of o

I have made most of my money as a freelancer making weird integrations between legacy systems, migrating data that no one knew anything about, building or designing systems people weren't even able to formulate in any coherent way to m

I really think that Flickr has unrealised potential. One of the reasons photographers use Instagram is probably the ability to share their work with a wide enough audience and not just "photo-snobs". For years Instagram has been m

That could also be correct. But if I was under legal/contractual obligations, with Hetzner as my hosting provider, I would have their legal department confirm this. Since Hetzner found the need for appending the paragraph I referenced,

I read it differently, especially in light of Schrems II. EU-datacenters from any of the big US-based providers does not automatically make you comply either.

I think it depends on how you read the Schrems II ruling and how you read Hetzners words. Any of the big cloud providers can claim that they comply with EU legislation, but they also have to comply with US-legislation and if 3-letter agency

To the best of my knowledge, this is already too late. I remember reading through their FAQ and seeing that hence they now have a US-based owner, they are then within reach of US 3-letter agencies.

Personally I underestimated the effect of small, on the surface unimportant, human interactions. I love being alone and I recharge from solitude. But the small encounters at the coffee machine or just smiling to a colleague is still human i

I really enjoyed reading this. Thanks a lot for sharing! It is bleak and in-your-face. But I like it. I wholeheartedly agree with his underlying message, that all of it is just distractions, that may keep you from living.

Really successful people get a lot of offers to say "no" to. It was probably Derek Sivers, whom is mentioned elsewhere in this thread, that said: Early in your career, or when just starting something new - say "yes" to e

Has Joplin become any faster? I tried the switch a year or two ago. The export and import went somewhat smoothly, but Joplin was so incredibly slow to sync that I ended up going back to Evernote. I do have many years of notes in Evernote, b

That is actually a very good idea. I am pretty certain that I will love it. The main feature drawing me in is the screen on the back, which will keep me from constantly looking at pictures right after I have taken them.

I bought my X-T2 several years ago for the same reason. Speaking of grain. The Fujifilm sensor actually adds quite pleasant grain at higher ISO. So I sometime shoot with deliberate high ISO because I like the look that comes out of it. I am
