There's essentially no enforcement of copyright law in many of the signatory states. Yes DRM kind of sucks, but rampant piracy also kind of sucks. The way the US does it I think is closer to optimal than the way Vietnam does it. That&#

That's the price of freedom: putting individuals in control of their data means they have responsibility to protect it. But is that such a bad trade-off? Let me put it another way. Someone has to decide where it's safe to send a

This is the Grover Norquist / Tea Party position: it's important to keep tax preparation horrible so that people have a healthy hatred of paying taxes. I consider this an extremely ideological stance. Simplifying the tax code is a

It's a natural monopoly because the government automatically receives copies of your tax information. You couldn't just set up a competitive market for tax preparation software with the government selling access to everyone's

Absolutely. Maybe the article is correct that subscription pricing is for products that do not have an increasing user base, i.e. the user base has plateaued. Just because the user base has stagnated doesn't mean the product has to sta

OK, but if the company held $50 in non-cash assets and $50 in cash, the same logic would hold. The "growth and recurring revenue," stuff you're talking about is just an asset pricing restriction, which requires that the $50 i

This is great thinking on this matter, much better than the blunt instrument we're looking at currently. I still kinda think the blunt instrument is an improvement over the status quo, but it's hard to say.

As a kid I took an "intro to programming" summer course based around scheme. If I hadn't felt some echo of familiarity with all the parentheses when I started with emacs, I don't know if I would have become an avid fan l

Yeah. Comparing org-mode to handwritten notes? You can grep through your notes, quickly refile, integrate with other software, use hyperlinks, and synchronize over multiple devices. But the same is true of onenote or evernote.

Have you tried org-capture? It's nice to have the files be accessible through keyboard shortcuts, but it has the additional benefit that the potential places I could drop some random note are specified in advance, forcing me to maintai

Connecting to IFTTT provides some value to the sites too. It's not like IFTTT is pillaging the client sites here. Clearly most of the services have seen enough value to do these upgrades, not just once but multiple times.

Wasn't Vulkan released less than a month ago? There is a bit of a running joke about Qt 5.6 because it was branched (i.e. feature freeze!) in August of last year.

Do you know C++? If so a very fast way to learn is to clone some Qt projects, poke inside and see what makes them tick.

C++ is certainly difficult, but if your expectations are mainly based on Reddit's opinion of C++, probably the language is not as bad as you think.
