FreeBSD appreciates, but doesn't need donations like the OpenBSD foundation does. many FreeBSD committers are FTE for a number of commercial outfits and work on FreeBSD full time. OpenBSD has hackathons, that are funded by donations.

and if you don't need a GUI, you can always install OpenBSD -- no extras required. it includes a useful OSPF and BGP daemon, BFD in the next release (I believe), and a version of pf that isn't a few years old :)

the bespoke part is "what is your definition of down?". is it 10% packet loss? is it physical loss of link? is it something else? is it a combination? is it 15 seconds of $X or a full minute?
