So you're thinking less of Java in general. I won't argue on that, because neither of us will change their mind. But the author was basically saying that you can write better Java in an editor than if you were using an IDE. And th

I'm using an IDE, but I read the docs anyway. I also just jump into the implementation and figure if the docs are correct. I don't know why the IDE should prevent anyone to do that. Again, it doesn't depend so much on the too

I think it just depends on how many users your library expects. When there's a huge user base, proper documentation pays off.

I'm not sure I buy his argument. I see many programmers who produce inferior code with an IDE and many programmers who produce excellent code with an IDE. I'm in the Java ecosystem, where IDEs are pretty much ubiquitous. But I

I'm not sure it will persist as a streaming service for very long as competitors seem to have unlimited resources (Amazon, Apple). But it does a really good job at producing content globally, so I think it will persist as one of the ma

Not necessarily? I'm talking about constant string literals in source code which can be validated at compile time.

The compiler can raise a warning about bad characters. It can't detect all problems, but it certainly can help with some. It's not the type system, but many dynamic languages are interpreted instead of compiled.

Google does certainly use log4j. They didn't write every single line of code themselves that they're using.

Do you have advice for projects that use Maven? I know every package on Maven Central has a PGP signature, but as far as I know, Maven doesn't verify them.

Yes, somehow people seem to confuse a link to the Github repo with the same tags with a verifyable build and a hash of the result.

OP's description sounds like they are working alone on this project and that there's no peer review. Which sounds like a weird thing to do for a junior dev that just got out of college.

I think that refactoring is often used as a means to better understand code. This might be your own code that you wrote yesterday or it might be someone else's code from 3 years ago. In order to really understand a piece of code, some

I think typically a generation is around 30 years, but this changes over time. Currently it's higher in the western world, but it was shorter 100 years ago.

It's a nitpick but did anyone else stumble over the term "pre-pandemic 2010"? What audience is the author writing for? Historians in a hundred years?

I'd say, yes. The US is just consuming talent from the entire world and it works because tech jobs in the US have really competitive salaries. But this talent is missing elsewhere, so I don't think it's sustainable in the lon

Construction costs are cheaper than ever? The prices have skyrocketed in the past year. Is this something special to Germany? I would've expected that the pandemic shows equal effects elsewhere.

I don't think this is what people mean by a rewrite here. I expect any code that makes it to review to undergo some kind of refactoring. Sometimes it's going to be refactored as part of the review. And if throwing away your first
