Could I bother you for a couple of specifics for why you left the field? As I mentioned earlier I'm exploring bioinformatics, and I've previously spoken to JunkDNA at length about his own experience, so it would be nice to hear an

I actually agree with you regarding bioinformatics, and the subject you describe is one which I'm exploring as a career path. I was describing an indictment of classification schemes, not bioinformatics, and it seems there are plenty o

You seem to have allowed the intricacies of the subject to distract you from my meaning. All of that is true, and there are obvious macrostructures, such as those you mentioned, which are credible. However, the worship of phylogenetic class

I agree, and that's why I said "Modern classification schemes." The current system doesn't work, and bioinformatics is blasting it away at such a speed that it can't seem to keep up. The current response seems to be

Are you asking "how do you define life?" or "how do you separate organisms from each other?"? Regarding either question, I don't think anybody has a good answer, and that's what's so fascinating, because i

As I study biology and microbiology in college, the more I realize that taxonomy and phylogeny classification schemes are essentially bullshit. Bioinformatics and evolution research have shown "life" to be much more ambiguous and

My brother, a great guy, is starting his degree in civil engineering and is seriously considering one day working for the government to help develop systems that deliver water to people whom would otherwise not have enough water to survive.

Wow. Bad move, Anon (and I'm the last person who would normally say that). This was a really crappy thing to do to innocent folks just trying to make an honest career, many of whom probably use the same credentials for their online ban

I actually agree. The submissions regarding the outcome of the zimmerman case were rightfully flagged to prevent them being on the front page. I'm surprised this hasn't suffered the same fate.

I'm surprised to see a NR post on the front page here. While I was once a frequent reader, I've found their overly caustic partisan style and embarrassing illogical treatment of the NSA scandal - "dragnet surveillance is OK,

For the following reasons: 1) assume that the HN readership satisfactorily correlates to the startup demographic at large 2) the majority of the respondants answered 26-30, as was also the case in the poll that tptacek referenced elsewhere

Love it! Very useful, bookmarked (bkmrkt?) Slightly offtopic, but what's with startups and one-off projects just taking a word and removing all the vowels? Seems edgy I guess. Or agile, like we write fast and break words .

Your statement is only marginally correct, but mostly misleading to the point of being practically wrong. Depending on what you eat, your body absorbs 80%-97% of calories according to the following (simplified) equation: Energy in = Energy
