Being married to a framework is arguably worse than using separate, isolated and composable libraries to handle the equivalent things. You can fight architectural problems of a library easily, but not when there's one inside a framewo

To me, HN's "bias" is not so much about left/right, but rather the individualism/collectivism aspect of things. "Regulation is a good tool to weed out the bad stuff; free market can't solve this or that; b

Mk II was a wonderful no-nonsense keyboard. Super light and had PCB-mounted MX Blue switches. Despite a big & plasticy case it felt like a precision tool to me. I wish I had bought a PCB mounted successor instead of a modern plate mount

I still use Flash for youtube (with an add-on that enforces it) because Firefox doesn't seem to be able to handle my 4-monitor Xmonad setup properly with HTML5 fullscreen video. And the process also locks up my soundcard until I kill t

It's absolutely unsafe to handcrank windows while driving, but when is that ever needed? I long for my old hand-cranked-window MB 200D days when my newer Toyota has 3 failed electrical windows out of four. And it's costing so much

Other manufacturers seem to be able to design devices that have the sturdiness and the battery such that extra cases aren't required in everyday use.

There are three philosophies to deal with multiple workspaces and multiple monitors: * one pool of WSs for all monitors (gnome,mate,win10) * one shared pool of WSs for each monitor (xmonad) * one pool of WSs for each monitor (awesome, dwm,

As long as Python actively refuses to support real constants among some other immutability related features, I think the more recent versions of JS are going to get past Python in sheer elegance of code.

Spreadsheets are indeed suited for this very task. But on the other hand, they remain very user-hostile. I couldn't keep my accounts up-to-date if it wasn't for ledger, vim, and the command-line interfaces. Projects like sc or ses

It's not even ASCII. Blocks and "double pipes" fall out of the 127-character range easily. I also agree that a lot of the benefits and crude aesthetics is lost on using extra codepages and fancy characters: I enjoy my NetHack

I had similar progression when I switched to Gentoo in 2007. I would boot into windows maybe every 3 months, and it was always a hassle with the security updates. Wiped out the partition after a couple of years of checking into windows mayb

I would like to see the 3.5" floppy do a comeback, for instance as a 1TB+ flash drive. It is large enough that you can comfortably handle it physically and label it, maybe it could be a small throwback to the age of floppies and zip dr
