For me, friends happened naturally for the first 15 years of my life. When I lost all mine as I became an adult, I didn't know how to gain new ones. Most of my old friends I met through other friends. But if I have no friends, that can

Oh, you don't need special hardware to do y-scrolling correctly. It's just a strange set of writes: $2006, $2005, $2005, $2006. MMC3 is for the scanline counter, which allowed SMB3 to have the score bar on the bottom of the screen

The NES designers goofed and made the size of the view window (nametable) 240 pixels tall. This makes vertical scrolling awkward as it throws a non-power-of-two divisor into the math. The NES doesn't have a division instruction - only

Funny, as a patient I prefer the opposite. Higher educated nurses tend to play doctor, but I can't trust their opinion because they aren't real doctors. It comes at the cost of them listening poorly, for they carry the confidenc

Purity helps a lot but it's far from making automatic parallelism trivial. See for example how few FP languages do it. Not many.

The problem is that reddit randomly ignores this and switches back to the redesign on a whim.

Writing stateful code in Haskell is super clunky though. State monads and lens? - Yuck! I'd take an OO language over that mess any day.

In some, autism manifests as constant screaming, violent outbursts, or meltdowns. Many are non-verbal. Keep that in mind.

I'm ignorant on the subject, but is JSON really much better than SOAP? I thought everyone hated SOAP.

Lexer generators seem like a useful algorithm wrapped up in heaps of framework bullshit. Wouldn't it be better to have a simple program that inputs regex and outputs a DFA than one that handles the entire lexing process?

People are inherently selfish. Everyone is looking to better their own self-interests, seek validation, and seek attention in life. A community - any community - is made entirely of these people. An effective leader is one who can play to t

A few months ago I was walking alone in the park when I saw a bright light moving in strange patterns in the sky. It scared the pants off of me. For about a day my mind was nothing but paranoid thoughts. I had fear that I had seen something

Huh. I used these magazines to implement a 3d renderer on the NES last year. Kinda funny to see them posted here. They really are excellent help. BTW, here's a good site for this sort of thing: http://codebase64.org

Here's an interesting read on wood hardness: http://www.woodgears.ca/hardness_test/ It's pretty amazing how much variability there is between samples of the same species.

The crème de la crème of text compression for games back then was Huffman coding. I'm a bit surprised Zork didn't use it, as surely it would have saved space. Compression algorithms like LZ weren't viable in games until much

I wrote a stack based language for the 6502 before. It's actually really trivial to do. If you have stack code that looks like this: "foo bar qux baz" and want to convert it to assembly, all you have to do is insert JSR instr

The comments here have given me an idea for my own hash tables. Rather than accounting for poor hash functions using phi or fmix, I'm going to measure the hash function's distribution at run time and throw an error if its bad. For

Oh, the NES controller bit order is 100% arbitrary. There's no standard - it all depends on if the programmer decided to write a ROL or ROR instruction that day. But I agree with your point.

Something simpler is to put all bitmask enums in a namespace and use ADL to find the operators. Like this: https://pastebin.com/raw/ANh93JnN Personally though, I wouldn't use this safety in most code. You'd h

Several compiler optimizations center around proving which variables don't change. Allowing type punning makes it harder for the compiler to do this.

To me, this rant seems more directed at C standards people than the guy he sent it to. That doesn't excuse his vitriol, but I hope people will read between the lines. Sometimes people forget that C was created for writing operating sys
