Great idea. But as a fast typist of both prose and code I found the interface nearly unusable. Please make it behave more like a normal edit box. I never had any idea of the location of my cursor. The lack of alt-backspace made it unbearabl

Take it from someone who averages 140 WPM and peaks at 160-170 WPM. Don't skip errors and return to them later. Do delete whole words (alt-backspace) and re-type them from the beginning. When you get really fast, almost all typing errors ar

Generating the word tree is short and simple, though. It's also useful as a standalone Unix utility. Here's my one-minute hack: import sys import collections tree = lambda: collections.defaultdict(lambda: [0, tree()]) de

Emacs works the same way. You set an anchor (the mark) and the region implicitly spans the text between the anchor and the cursor (the point). This kind of stateful approach (as opposed to a stateless alternative such as holding down shift

The top-voted answer implements addition. If you're allowed to do that, the subtraction-based division algorithm is easy and foolproof if not as fast: u32 add(u32 x, u32 y) { u32 z = 0; for (u32 c = 0, m = 1; m; m

Parsing and responding to a question like that isn't difficult when the questions are algorithmically generated from a finite number of human-designed types.

Thanks, I know about Henderson's book and all the lambda papers--I've read or at least skimmed pretty much everything there is to read on Lisp, which is why I was surprised not to have come across The Architecture of Symbolic Computers.

Oh, the rhetoric is arrogant and self-congratulatory even by the standards of Lisp books. It's either amusing or aggravating, depending on your point of view.

Let Over Lambda is a fantastic read. Don't make the mistake of writing it off as I did due to the author's triumphant tone. Indeed, the rhetoric is so over the top it is often indistinguishable from parody. He is the Ayn Rand of Common Lisp

The Architecture of Symbolic Computers was not known to me and looks very interesting. Unfortunately, it's long out of print and the price for used copies on AbeBooks is high. If anyone has a copy in the Seattle area they'd like to donate f

The Coursera courses I've previewed have been fine. But even the flagships (e.g. Andrew Ng's machine learning course) are just traditional lectures divided into smaller pieces with an auxiliary system for dealing with homework, student-stud

I had a quick go at it using memoized minimax search. I assumed that picking up any dropped eggs is automatic when you're on the ground floor, but it would also be easy to model it as an action. https://gist.github.com/3157191 Let me know

Good point! That adds a lot of nuance. With several eggs, if you drop one egg and it doesn't break, you have the option of postponing the pick-up until later or leaving it on the ground altogether. Let me think about it.

That version seems too simple to be interesting. Let there be n floors. In the worst case you'll have to walk to the top floor from the ground floor in case the answer happens to be n-1. Therefore you can't do any better than n-1 steps in t
