I might use this in future critical discussions of AI. “It’s not really intelligent.” Yeah, well, neither am I. On a more serious note, it seems obvious to me that technology is incremental, and we are where we are. Given 20 more years of p

While reading this article, I imagined an Eternal September writ large across the whole industry. Maybe in the beginning it was a few idealistic visionaries, who attracted other idealists who could get behind the vision. Then it succeeded w

I cannot recall an instance where virtual methods were definitely my best option. I have used them sparingly, but I suspect further review would reveal a perfectly good alternative. I have always considered them one of the least readable co

My takeaway from this thread: People are tyrants. They want the freedom to enjoy their own lifestyle, but are not tolerant, and so do not want liberty generally. The want to use the State to force people with different values to refrain fro

That you believe you can judge any developer by how they use their text editor is one of the most pitiful things I've heard on this topic yet. Every time I begin a new job, I pray I'm spared crossing paths with people who think li

I didn't notice any control for whether the couples went to the same school. It's a well worn trope within Christian circles that people go to christian colleges to find a spouse.

I think that reaching for legislation as the tool to minmax any desirable societal metric is a bad doctrine. That does not mean I am against every possible instance of it. DUI is very immediate. It's like putting one round in the chamb

I have commented before about A/B testing the law to achieve statistical outcomes, and I absolutely do see a problem with it. It tosses principles and liberties out the window. Legislating things that are correlated with the thing yo

Not the point. It isn't that SO is meaner to marginalized people because SO knows who they are. It's that marginalized people are more sensitive to being excluded, and less likely to voluntarily endure the hazing.

I remember 2002-era Wikipedia. I personally found its openness far more valuable, but then other people became obsessed with making it just a bigger, hyperlinked, traditional encyclopedia. I believe something was lost.

I'm in that third group because I perceive SO as a 'no good deed goes unpunished' culture. I already went through that with Wikipedia, and I've got better things to do than fight insiders.
