Currently building out http://forever.fm , an automatically-beatmatched radio stream of popular music from around the web. Built out the real-time music streaming backend in a mix of Python, C++ and Golang, just submitted the iOS

You don't need to be embedded to have performance matter - even if your OS gives you concurrency primitives, there are many situations where jumping into kernel code is still "too expensive."

The actor model and data immutability are good for programmer productivity and reducing errors, but not for writing highly performant or low-level code. Even then, someone has to write the message queue, and how do you plan do to that wit

Github does have academic plans. When I signed up, it was 2 years of a free Micro plan (5 private repos) if you signed up with a verified school email address. When they're back up, check out: https://github.com/edu

I agree, although I worded the post in favour of "only" only due to the lack of situations where I've found a DSLR to be a better "moment capture device" than a phone. For most people, a smartphone is all they'll need in most situations

Quite correct - I neglected to think back more than a century. Very good point. I was merely trying to point out that modern pop music, while successful, has been very commodified. I'll stick in a quick footnote.

Thanks for posting this, @camtarn - I launched about 6 months ago and tried HN back then, too. Reddit ate it up, but HN wasn't all that interested. I've since written a bunch of postmortem blog posts, although the site is now running strong

My bad - I tried to leave scrolling alone, but somewhere in my spaghetti of media queries it got hijacked. Working on a fix. Thanks for the heads up!

It's fairly slow as-is, taking something like 500ms to locate and render one thumbnail. It might not work the best in a Rails project, but could be used as a pre-processor in a Rake task of some sort.

You're right - the original author of the algorithm based it on the Reddit algorithm. (Original gist: https://gist.github.com/a54cd41137b678935c91 )

Not the best - faces might not have the highest entropy in a photo. Existing photo managers (i.e.: iPhoto) already have advanced facial recognition built in, though.

Dupes are definitely possible - though rare in my case. Not only am I randomizing which photos get thumbnailed, I also randomize their order on each page load. I do screen the photos before they get deployed anyways.
