You don't need to follow anyone (or even have an account) to scrape content… Someone following a huge amount of accounts usually wants to get a lot of followers quickly this way through follow-backs.

It was open source (except the Scylla database layer) from the beginning, AFAIK - that blog post just says that they haven't set it up yet, because that's the hardest part to run

Not sure when that was, but there's significantly more dev stuff now since around November, e.g. the iOS devs I knew from Twitter showed up there now and are posting regularly (including dev stuff), while before last autumn it was hard

The funny thing is, they were doing just fine for years with just their own money. Now that they have sooo much more money, they suddenly can't afford separate developers for different platforms... they should be able to hire 10x more
