The question then becomes, who decides what that falls under? It's the kind of question that results in laws against braiding hair without a Cosmetology license.[1] And it's a lot easier to code for public consumption, given that all you ne

Well, I would contend the "line" would be "an accredited penetration tester can't break your software", much like a health inspection is "an accredited health and safety inspector can't find anything wrong with your business". But that open

The key word there is "prevailing quality standards". If a developer writes something, in good faith, that's vulnerable to SQL injection, or stores passwords in plaintext on a server, is that negligence?

And yet not a word about battery power. You'd think that if this is in this one, they'd have it at the top of the list.

My issue (well, one of my issues) is that I'm on a rather pristine new work computer, and while I do use Calibre at home, I don't want to put it on this machine. Additionally, I don't want do deal with the hassle of creating a Kindle accoun

Every once in awhile the state of DRM really hammers itself home, to me. Case in point, when someone is literally giving a potentially interesting book away and I can't be arsed to take it because getting it onto my reader of choice is just

Of course Amazon doesn't support it-- they, like the C&Ding authors, subscribe to the kool-aid of "everyone that was lending these books would have been a sale".

You're perfectly welcome to use the same password multiple times-- it's as secure as you yourself make it. When Google generates an App password, it displays it once-- and then trashes it. On that same page is a list of the identifiers you'

The only issue is that a lot of programs (mobile apps, especially) seem to interact directly with the Dropbox API, which leaves no possible interface for a secondary authentication. Google gets around this by having app-specific passwords t

Well, the obvious starting point is this[1] SA Thread that directly led to the Reddit-embarassing that resulted in the dropping of the pedo boards. You may or may not be able to view it, but the short version is that they created a "Reddit

In my experience, some of the best advice I've ever received has been from anecdotes that run counter to the text of an article. ...I kid. It's actually an interesting idea. I don't know about scrapping them entirely, but I think a lot of s

To be fair, I don't think anyone missed the initial IPO, given that roughly half the stories on HN at the time were about how terrible an investment it would be. I imagine that if they had to pull and re-file their IPO (not being a follow

I would be very surprised if dentists saw this as a disruptive threat-- since these are real teeth, these are still subject to needing to be cleaned on a regular basis, unlike just dropping your dentures into a cup before you go to bed at n

I would agree with this, although I'm in the unenviable position of needing a lot of dental work after not having had any for awhile. I'd far rather have research be done into making longer-lasting and/or cheaper or easier to implant perman

As someone who lives in Marin and goes to Sol Food, I can say that the 30 minute wait isn't because they have shitty service. I'll also note that it's generally a better idea to phone in your order, unless you're eating at a non-peak hour.

I work in the game industry. It is, traditionally, a higher stress environment than other jobs. If someone can't take the stress of the job, is it the fault of the industry, the company, or the mental processes of the person in question? I

Honestly, this is just making me spend less on Steam, since I know most of the cheaper games I'm interested in will end up as HIBs sooner or later, complete with Steam keys.

The backlash here is comparable to EA's banning of users from their single-player games, I would say. Shitty customer service is crappy, but the backlash is greater in proportion to the criticality of the asset in question. In Paypal's case

A single-sourced, anonymous, piece like this one wouldn't (or at least shouldn't) be making the front page of widely read publications. Shouldn't it be? I think HN was perfectly fine in this regard. There are a lot of companies that aren'
