I think it's a slightly self deprecating jab at what is really a good idea. The Drools rule engine mentioned is, without a doubt, aimed at an enterprise audience. http://www.jboss.org/drools Drools 5 introduces the Business Logic int

It doesn't matter if you're a fundamentalist Christian or a liberal progressive, the temptation to take something at face value and act morally superior is stronger than the one to interpret the intent behind what's being said.

Would you put a bit of javascript on your site that ran GP on your visitor's computers? With an option to disable it, of course.

You need to look at it through the eyes of a teenage girl. People customize their myspaces in ways that Facebook will never allow, and it becomes part of their identity. Here's an example: http://bit.ly/cLX6RT

Thanks for that link. That's a huge change for 2009! I believe that hanging around tech people gives one the false impression that Google has saturated the search market.

by psawaya 17y ago
Yep, but at this point, Google is literally synonymous with search. Android, however is still much less recognizable than the iPhone. Then again, marketing to that many people is something of a science, and I admit to not understanding it w

It seems appropriate. Google is all about minimalism in design.

I'm surprised they advertised search, and not, say, the Nexus One or any of their newer products. Still, definitely one of the best commercials I've seen.

I think it's because the professor was off to the side, drawing on a tablet, while we were staring at the screen it was projecting on. It also didn't help that we were in a computer lab, with huge 22 inch iMacs in front of us, making it har

If you're interested in HTML canvas, and want to get started quickly, you should look into processing.js: http://processingjs.org/ Otherwise, this "cheat sheet" helped me the most: http://blog.nihilogic.dk/2009/02/html5-canvas-cheat-shee

I went to a CS theory class this semester which was taught in a computer lab by a teacher drawing notes into Photoshop with a Wacom tablet. I ended up switching into a compilers class, which is taught by a professor writing notes on a black

The author says xkcd epitomizes everything bad about "nerd culture", but honestly, I think I could say the same about this blog post. Who really cares how accurate Randall's description of OS X's system architecture is? It gets across the p

I'd say it would be a problem if half the class just doesn't show up, figuring they can just watch the lecture online later. Some professors think this will make undergrads lazy about showing up to class, and more likely to fall behind.

I thought the standard argument was that online courseware doesn't reduce class enrollment, but attendance. Not that either is a good reason to stop putting course materials and lectures online.

I've wondered how he does it, since I've noticed XKCD updates without fail at midnight eastern time. He must be finishing them well before the deadline, and have some kind of CMS publish it right on time.

I don't know if they're quite the same, but if you like Alcest, I bet you'd enjoy Agalloch. The Mantle is really a beautiful album, though it has some BM vocals. I think the new Pelican album, What We All Come to Need, is also pretty relaxi
