It’s just a lesson in worse is (often) better. If you can do some most of the job with something that is either cheaper, easier to build, or easier to iterate on, then it will often overtake a better engineered solution.

I don’t know, I haven’t seen a great replacement. The only things that come/came close are things like Elks Lodge, VFW, Country Clubs/sports clubs, and things like that. I don’t think most of these have thrived into in the 21st ce

I’ve read 5 of the books, I’m fine with the adaptation. The books all but make it impossible to have continuity of characters in any real way, which would make for a weird show, IMO. This is fundamentally different than LOTR which does have
