Yup, all these op-eds reek of FUD. I also think people are overestimating the impact that FAANG going full remote will have on the tech world. I know that they're trend setters, but a lot of companies have already been operating full r

Agreed. Async stand ups are an agile smell. If you can successfully get unblocked async over slack/email/whatever, there isn't a need a for standups. That just means you have a functioning line of communication for your team.

My title is "software engineer". I don't have an engineering degree, or even a CS degree. I feel pretty uncomfortable calling myself an engineer since it seems to carry a certain weight of responsibility, but seeing as the ti

I had an ideal flexible schedule. WFH was already an option, so I was spending 2-3 days in office and the others at home with no real fixed scheduled. I miss the change of scenery. My WFH setup is great, but sick of being in the house 95% o

I think the "library" vs "framework" argument irt react is pretty silly. At the end of the day, what difference does it make? React may not be as opinionated as other application frameworks, but it's also non comple

Great advice. I see a lot of people in tech with inflated ideas of what success means, and they're almost all tied strictly to salary/net worth. Yeah, having money is nice, but if that's all you base happiness/idea of su

It's sloppy, but why is redirection a concern? If there's an issue that redirects login information to a test account, it could just as easily be redirected to any other account (test or not).

The application spam hurts both candidates and companies. Unfortunately the only way that would change is if the entire application funnel got overhauled to stop using paper resumes as the point of entry. You can't reasonably spend ti

I probably should have just said "a majority", but Google has a good resource on page load studies[1]. "DoubleClick by Google found 53% of mobile site visits were abandoned if a page took longer than 3 seconds to load."

How so? Anything < 1 sec of load time on average is "good enough" for 90% of use cases. The only way you could possibly quantify this is by collecting data on # of conversions between the "optimized static site" and t

I'm seeing 714kb of data loaded over 924ms. Not as small as possible, but I don't think this really qualifies as bloat. Imo the benefits of using React boilerplate for a landing page would be: - Quick to set up / customize (f

I'm with you. Even if the 'shelter in place" restrictions get lifted, the economic fallout will last a while. I'm highly skeptical of the "economy will just unpause" theory.

Agreed. This is my main issue with the "you don't need frameworks" rhetoric. If you're a small team or a solo dev working on a simple app, and you know the source code very well, frameworks might not be the best choice.
