What does it take to reverse engineer the silicon? I thought I'd seen an project for automating it, but I can't find it.

It's called "memory diamond." I'm aware of it thanks to Charlie Stross[1], who credits the idea to Eric Drexler. [1] http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2007/05/shaping_...

I had the terrifying thought that this could apply to HTTPS or SSH sessions. That's alarmist, though, right?

It's an interview with Jon 'maddog' Hall, and the title quote is mangled: it's "where the next Albert Einstein of computer science could come from." Smartphones are a good market for Linux.

Reasons given: * Avoiding things like the supernode crash from December 2012.[1] * Supporting the growing mobile share, which can't contribute as supernodes. [1] http://blogs.voxeo.com/voxeotalks/2010/12/

I expected to see more about Twine.[1] It's really simple, but it lets you build a "Choose Your Own Adventure" story easily. People who haven't programmed before have picked it up and done interesting things with it. I

Oh, that's funny. Shit Reddit Says is a sub-reddit that calls out offensive comments on Reddit. They've been called the PC Police and the like, and they appropriated "fempire" after people got sensitive about being calle

Hah! I've been playing with Jekyll and Pelican and other static site generators, and one of the thoughts I had was "if Geocities were still around, I could host pages there."

So, it's a desktop client, that runs in a browser. This feels like the worst of both worlds; you have to leave it on if you don't want to miss anything, you can't access it from elsewhere, and you're constrained to a web

Don't get hung up on the word "monopoly" here. The relevant issue being discussed is centralization vs decentralization.

Fighting spam based on the content is a great idea. I don't think it's sufficient for the web. Specifically, email spam and spam on the web have different characteristics: with email, you try to send more, so there's a tenden

I may be misreading this, but I think there's a big difference between "being readily accessible to the NSA" and "taking a judge to make it available."

I've tried a few ways of capturing and sorting information. I tried the Hipster PDA [1], but without review, sorting, and copying onto my computer, I had issues with finding notes, and ever-growing stacks. I tried Org-mode by using MobileOr

Passwords produced are only ten or eleven characters long - pretty good, but they could be longer. Edit: A recent Ars Technica article[1] suggests an 11-character minimum. Ending with 0 or ! like this doesn't really add a whole character to

The maker replied to me in a comment below - it won't work in Mobile Safari, but now it only sends the first frame, so the page will finish loading and it won't eat up bandwidth.
