It could up to 3 gigabytes per VHS tape! Wow! Someone else in the thread posted a link to screenshots of a Linux port: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10246531

Note, Paperback has over twice the density of Optar. Not that I'm complaining. I bookmarked both because I think they're nifty, despite "media abuse" being the best tag I could think of.

That graph of "comparable algorithm strength" would be great if it included the key length of the symmetric cipher. It was discussed for 2048 bit RSA, but not for 4k or 8k. It seemed like an oversight.

Secret? It was talked about a lot here for a while. It started with a secret IP address in a trailer for The Imitation Game. Here's a later discussion. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8589835

I'm looking forward to great speech-to-text technology. I help run fan-driven transcripts for a podcast, and I recently tried using Google's; it returned something like the hosts were concussed, or Markov models of themselves. Edi

I've considered this problem before. If I remember my research, I'd investigate using bash's built-in echo or printf, and paste encoded versions of binaries into the terminal. To speed up the terminal work, get uudecode, base

In the ext2 days, an incident put a lot into lost+found. I had a Tripwire database with file checksums, and wrote a script to checksum the files and move them back into place. I think a handful of files were corrupted, but I got it bootin

Oof, I recognize one of those, from an email today. I'd thought I was talking to an internal recruiter... Incidentally, you have some duplicates.

Infinite Jest is a really brilliant book, but I remember the start of it seemed deliberately hard to read. Then I read enough to follow the rhythms and it became a compulsive read.

Huh, the whois hasn't changed. I think Wired's shifted it to the "buy this domain" thing before, and shifted it back, so perhaps this isn't permanent?

Ah, that's one way to handle the cert issue. I think the article alludes to kinda brute forcing another sha1. That's pricey, but potentially worthwhile, I suppose. As for the routing: you have seen BGP issues crop up, right? I t

I've used them before. I ran a Squid proxy and connected it to the NLANR cache hierarchy[1]; despite the name, it's more of a mesh with siblings. For the best speed, you can use bloom filters (or cache digests, in their terms[2])

Hey, the author's here! Were you in the area when Iben Browning predicted a big earthquake from New Madrid, back in 1990? Did that pique your curiosity about it?

It's plausible; I've been at a talk where they suggested checking the local cache and requesting it across the network in parallel. I'd thought maybe they were talking about, say, both people on a fast network, but digging in

Huh. 1. In Chrome, the "Audio Narration Off" was offscreen. I had to resize the browser to hit that button. Then it wouldn't show any content. 2. It worked just fine on my iPad. So maybe try a mobile device instead.

The author's from the area, so he probably was around when Iben Browning[1] made predictions of a 6.5-7.5 magnitude earthquake in December 1990. The predictions made international news, and then punchlines. [1] https://en.wi

The download's a zip file, with an iso file, with a lot of html files within a few folders. It's a bit tedious. I remembered that the Internet Archive has tools to simplify it, so I sent it over there... and it's not working!
