I can't beat this for terseness, but I think I could whip up something close (say 15 lines) in Python (readable) or Perl (would be shorter than Python but more readable than linux). I guess I am more curious about what Knuth did! Did h

I am not opposed to this being upvoted. It is a fairly interesting paper, and I am glad to see people express a variety of interests. I am curious though: there are many, many, many philosophy papers out there. Many are written on this topi

I think you have to wait for people who encountered meaningful art right around the time they hit puberty (say 12-14) to grow into rich adults for whom it held special value (say 40s). So I would say 30 years.

I would say the main thing that basic had going for it is that everyone seemed to have it on their desktop. In that sense, Javascript is a worth heir because it is right there in everyone's browser. I think BASIC felt simple because yo

You're doing fine, but at $600k, you'd be taking home $300k, and then its all going on rent unless you downsize drastically and move out of private school etc. I'm just explaining why the move would feel tough for a family.

I bet its mostly taxes and real estate. City + State + Federal taxes are around 50%. So $600k. Private School per kid is $50k. Assume two kids so about $100k. Okay, now a 4 bedroom apartment in NYC is like $25k/month (on Zillow, eyebal

It’s obvious: act young. Die your hair and adopt the “lingo” of the cool dudes. Like double barrel your boss with your fingers and wink and say “I like your style” no matter what he says. Or if you agree with a colleague you say “fo shizzle

I think the word "quietly" has now developed all kinds of insinuations and borders on editorializing. Consider: Teacher quietly teaching students math. It sort of implies that the teacher has something to hide. Google is making bl

I'm jealous of present day students. I wish I had these tools when I was a student (lectures laid out as notebooks that you can interact with to see how the graph changes). Of course just reading through or listening to clear explanati

This to me was actually quite an optimistic story. It seems to me that Dan is a talented writer who can milk a sob story. In order to get ahead in life -- admissions, sympathy -- he would concoct very elaborate and heart breaking stories. T

I am usually sarcastic but am not trolling this time. I agree with your observation. I will add that one simple reason people fail to do the task is because they try to remember it in their heads and then procrastinate. That is a deadly com

Yeah, I am tricking them into sending me a copy of their resume during an interview. I hope they see through this garbage manipulation and fight the man. I wonder what they think of FizzBuzz tests!
