Right now, country codes (ISO 3316 Alpha-2) converted from FIPS. In the future, anything that needs to be converted to ISO.

Thanks! While I agree GDELT doesn't have the kind of coverage some people may be looking for, I think it's the best source for world news insights. Oh nice, I actually saw Newscatcher on Rapid API but didn't see the marketing

Agreed, it's very hit or miss in some situations. I'm hoping to keep evolving this to clean it up and eek out more salient information. I think GDELT is the best source, nothing else comes close to coverage in my opinion, it'

I just did a quick query grouping all sources and number of articles per source in the database (currently about 4 days worth of data): https://pastebin.com/HyktFpML As you can see, there are already almost 8000 sources. I&

They're all online written news sources, but I believe GDELT is also getting into TV news so that might be coming in the future. There is no official list currently, but you could query either GDELT or TidalWaves to see which are avail

Most news articles mention multiple locations. It's probable that those pieces talked about both Pakistan/Hungary and Poland, so will be found in both countries. The locations are ordered by salience (proximity to start of the art

I'm definitely thinking of ways to improve it for long-term stories. You're right, fuzzy string matching would do wonders for that, thanks :)

Yep, currently the breaking stories are identified in the 15 minute intervals, so all the duplicate stories showing are from different times. If they have the same title that means that I can train the model to combine them. They also could

I spent 3 months building a data pipeline for parsing and transforming raw data from the GDELT project, as well as applying a machine learning model to find breaking news stories, which turned out to be a pretty nifty tool for creating visu

That's what this feels like. There's a lot wrong with online social features... points at the global echo chambers, the depression and anxiety epidemic, the broken dating scene, and toxicity of online discourse I don't blam

This is a myth. If you get blackout drunk and don't remember the night before, does that mean you ceased to exist in that time period? How can you prove any conclusion you come to? The idea that being dead is the same as not being born

Having an emotional breakdown is normal if you've been repressing and become overwhelmed. It can be re-traumatizing if it happens in an unfavorable time/place, and I'm not saying it's even necessary for healing. But, it&

From what I understand, that might just be a problem with the README. You might have to set your compiler to enable experimental feature flags (thus setup a different compilation channel).

I wonder how Rust will influence the outcome of this project? Will the Rust paradigm prevent memory leaks or somehow improve on the architecture of the big hitter browsers like Firefox and Chrome? It's super exciting to see how Rust wi

According to critical race theory, the identity group you fall into has systemic power over others. That means that no, you would not be considered disadvantaged or part of any oppressed group. Therefore it's not possible to be racist

That's a very disingenuous claim, since this is obviously political, not about clarity. Or, do you mean it's being changed because of the use of "black" specifically? In which case that's not being questioned here,

I think VR might fix these issues. The problem isn't necessarily lag, but spacial awareness and sound. With 3D sound and a representation of everyone in a virtual space, it might become a lot easier to have proper group conversations.
