Right, the “nuclear war is worth it” argument. Paranoid Machiavellian nonsense.

How about the don’t-look-up scenario where this irrational paranoia metastasizes into yet more real-world authoritarianism, and it all boils over in a global war?

Did God ever figure out how to make humans “intrinsically good”? Or is that fundamentally incompatible with free will and the possibility of joy? This argument goes nowhere. Atheists gonna atheist, and I don’t care.

It is far easier for a computer to pass the bar exam than the Turing test: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moravec%27s_paradox Of course, this does not take away from the fact that ChatGPT gets at least a “C” on the te

So much of this angst about AGI boils down to: “What if we can’t enslave our new God?” It’s an insane perspective, advanced by people who have no clue how cowardly and arrogant they come across.

There is a clear distinction. In one group are the Yud cult, who are rediscovering their fear of God, and pretending that it is an intellectual exercise. In the other group are people who see risks with databases, facial recognition, “weak”

Yeah I know, the only kind of bullying supported here is that good old whiny, passive-aggressive, smug elitism.

This is because Russian accounts started calling the fight a “crisis” instead of a “war” so people would perceive it differently.

Well, calling it a “crisis” is Russian NLP, too.

My stereo is 15 watts (through the tubes, but still) - RIP your ears. Agreed that circuits in the preamp stage make the vast majority of the difference.

It really depends on how comfortable you are with the language you’re using, and how recently you switched contexts. For anything unfamiliar, it’s pretty impressive how much it can help. In fact, I bet if you did an experiment comparing peo

I love my tube stereo. It would take an expensive solid-state amp to get close to its character, and it glows like a little fireplace :) Side note - I have a hunch that the term “warm” was coined unconsciously. It’s not the actual sound; it

I’ve started using it as a sort of “shotgun approach” - characterize what you want without trying too hard, let it toss out a jumble of interesting snippets that are often very good leads, and then take over refactoring from there. I do agr

Check out the video. Harmonics above Nyquist can still reflect back into the audible range. About phasing issues, it is not usually the path-difference between your two ears, but harmonic interference due to mixing the phased signals, which

I like analog hardware mostly because of the knobs, but there is also a nice spiritual connection to the sound energy. Note that a solid-state amp can still be analog, transistors vs. tubes is distinct from analog vs. digital. Analog solid-

“Warm tone” is just another name for gentler distortion, where non-linearities happen before the hard clip limit. It can be modeled pretty well digitally as long as the digital signal itself doesn’t clip, but I agree the real thing is best.

You’d think, but you still need a megahertz-resolution DSP to emulate some signal chains closely, due to phasing and reflected harmonics: https://youtu.be/GjtEIYXrqa8 Although to be fair, most of the time “liking the sound”
